Best Places To Get Coffee Around Columbia University
As the workload starts piling up, so does our need for caffeine. We might learn about a lot of different things in classes, but no one ever tells us about where to get a good cup of coffee! So from my few years at Columbia, here are the most fun places around campus.Â
1. The Hungarian Pastry Shop (1030 Amsterdam Avenue – 111th street)
Ideal to order one cup of coffee (with free refills) and sit at a table and study for 6 hours. It is definitely recommended for serious studying, because there is no loud music and NO WIFI – so there isn’t really a chance for you to get distracted and check Facebook every 5 minutes. It’s a huge space, so you’ll definitely find a spot to sit, even when finals makes all the libraries unbearably full. On a healthy note, they don’t use sugar syrups and make their drinks out of natural ingredients. So you have the best of health and taste.
PS. Please bring some cash, because they don’t accept credit cards
2. Oren’s Daily Roast (2882 Broadway – 112th street)
This might not be the best place to study, but it is definitely the best place to grab a cup of good coffee when you’re in a hurry! They have great quality java coffee to give you a caffeine rush when you need it. If you’re looking for an extreme caffeine jolt during finals week, you have to try the Red Eye: a large drip coffee with two shots of espresso.
3. Joe’s (550 W 120th Street – Broadway)
Definitely considered one of the most trendy places on campus to grab a cuppa’ joe. The only problem with this place is it’s perfect proximity to campus. Everyone knows about it and the line before class is definitely not one I would wait in. It is, however, exceptional when it comes to coffee – they don’t try any new flavors or syrups. Joe’s masters the classics and gives you a cup of coffee you will never forget.
4. Maxx Café (1262 Amsterdam Avenue)
Comfy couches, quiet ambience, and over the top armchairs makes this an ideal place to study. Maxx Café is open past midnight every night, which is great if you want to grab a coffee or some snacks while cramming for your next midterm. They have a delicious variety of pastries, salads, wraps, and sandwiches. However, a single purchase does not give you the right to move in for the rest of the day, you have to keep ordering to keep your spot!
5. Nussbaum & Wu
Just a couple of blocks away from campus, this cozy yet spacious café is not just a great coffee spot, but also has a vast menu of perfect study food. This menu includes bagels, sandwiches and pastas. Ideal for when you’re on a budget!
This semester don’t settle for Blue Java or Liz’s Place on campus; venture out into the neighborhood and try out a new set of coffee beans!Â
