Falling for the Greater New York: Daytrips and Getaways

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

For when sitting on the one open lawn outside of Butler staring at the beach screensaver on your laptop just doesn’t cut it.

Apple Picking

Midterms got you down? Pick an apple! If you’re not instagramming at Smorgasburg during the summer and then at an idyllic orchard in the fall, how will anyone on your feed even know that the seasons are changing?! Outhouse Orchards in North Salem, NY is just a short train and cab from the city and a great option for getting your red delicious on.

Storm King Art Center

Just one hour north from NYC, Hudson Valley’s Storm King Art center boasts one of the world’s most badass sculpture parks. All the aesthetic beauty and creative innovation of Art Hum with none of the pop quizzes and painting ID’s!

Woodbury Commons

Every so often a girl’s gotta stop lurking around the Urban Outfitter’s clearance section and schlep a little for her shopping. As someone who grew up going to Woodbury Commons with her mother, I can confidently recommend this outlet shopping experience to anyone who likes great deals from really cool brands like Rag & Bone, Prada, Lululemon, Dior, Burberry, Theory, etc… or anyone who has a nostalgic urge to buy a Coach wristlet. Come for the bargain bin prices, stay for the Claire’s outlet and tricked out food court.

Hiking in the Delaware River Valley

I’m not much of a fitness gal, but according to the syllabus for my mandatory hiking P.E. class, there are some really scenic trails not too far from campus. This is a great opportunity to prove to your friends, followers, and fans that your new Nikes are for more than just athleisure purposes. Also something about orange leaves being pretty and cool?

MoMA PS1

Not exactly outside of NYC, but how often do you really go to Long Island City? PS1 is more than just a place to darty and listen to deep house during the summer; it’s also a museum with a really cool “Greater New York” exhibit up right now. And I can highly recommend the diner down the street.Â
