Name: Layla TavangarSchool & Major: BC ’15, Economics and PsychologyPosition in SGA: Senior Class President
1. What made you want to run for senior class president? While I was studying abroad in Paris last spring, I immediately missed the community at Barnard and having active roles in groups on campus. After getting involved in similar groups and having that sense of community didn’t exist as a possibility in Paris, I knew I needed to think of a way I could be a leader senior year. All the leadership positions in the groups I was already a part of had been chosen for the next year, so I needed to think outside of what I already knew. I love Barnard so much, and so I decided that I wanted to do something that would allow me to give back to the College. Getting involved with SGA was the clear next step in my decision making process, and almost immediately, running for Senior Class President was the only option that felt right. I felt the same kind of emotional excitement and certainty when deciding to run as when I chose to go to Barnard, so I went for it!
2. What is the best activity SGA activity you’ve helped plan? This is actually my first year on SGA at all, so I’ll pick something from this year. At the beginning of the year, the senior class council did a super fun event with 16 Handles on the roof of the Diana. About 200 people came, and spending time on the Diana roof in such great weather with so many amazing women was such a great way to kick off the year!
3. When you’re not planning these awesome events, what else can you be found doing on campus? Other than SGA, I’m an enthusiastic member of Delta Gamma and the Columbia University Marching Band. I love both of those organizations so much, and I owe so much of what I’ve accomplished and what I will do in the future to the amazing experiences I’ve had in both!
4. What’s the best thing about being a senior? Right now, it’s the feeling that I can really do (more or less) whatever I feel like doing. I only have a limited time left in college, so if I see someone I want to talk to, I’ll talk to them. If there’s some event going on I want to check out, I’ll just go for it. If I embarrass myself, it doesn’t really matter – anyone who remembers and cares won’t necessarily be around me for much longer, so I just live and let live.
