Looking Back to Look Forward: New York Fashion Week 2015 Highlights

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

With New York Fashion Week just around the corner, Her Campus looks back at the most memorable moments from the NYFW Spring and Fall 2015 shows, which were nothing short of inspired, progressive, and innovative. Here are our top ten picks:

Spring 2015 (NYC, September 2014)

1. Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony presented its Spring 2015 collection with a one-act play written by Spike Jonez and Jonah Hill. The play featured stars such as Elle Fanning, Rashida Jones, and Karlie Kloss. Now that’s what I call a quadruple threat: acting, singing, dancing, and modeling!

2. Chromat

During its Spring 2015 show, Chromat sent model Denise Bidot down the runway, the first “plus-size” Latina model to ever grace the NYFW stage. (Plus-sized goes in quotes because she is stunning and representative of a more normal body image. Am I right or am I right?)

3. Marc Jacobs

Although their faces may have been slightly obscured by bangs, I still have to give Marc Jacobs credit for sending his models down the runway without makeup. By presenting his models sans heavy stage makeup, Jacobs told women around the world that less is more and that they’re beautiful as they are.

4. Salute the Runway

Salute the Runway dressed former United States Military servicewomen in head-to-toe designer outfits. The fashion show was sponsored by Fatigues to Fabulous, an organization that assists female soldiers transition back to civilian life.

5. Rodarte

Rodarte featured models with pierced eyebrows for their Spring 2015 collection. I can’t say I’ll be experimenting with that trend anytime soon, but it certainly looked good with Rodarte’s punk-chic aesthetic.

Fall 2015 (NYC, February 2015)

1. Kanye West x Adidas

Kanye West had a star-studded front row audience for the showing of his collaboration with the sportswear company Adidas. Among the guests of honor were Anna Wintour, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Sean Combs, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Alexander Wang. Now how’s that for a first-time designer’s celeb endorsements?

2. Proenza Schouler

Proenza Schouler hosted its Fall 2015 show in the Whitney Museum’s former location, making for a very fashionable Night at the Museum. Designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough took creative cues from several New York School artists, such as Helen Frankenthaler and Robert Morris. This collection (and its presentation) made for a gorgeous marriage of art and clothing design.

3. Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger, known for his all-American inspired clothing, had a football themed show to display his Fall 2015 collection. This is the kind of football I’d be willing to watch more often.

4. Desigual Fashion For Relief

In their Fall 2015 show, Desigual Fashion For Relief showed the world that different is beautiful when the brand sent Winnie Harlow, the first high fashion model with vitiligo, to walk the runway.

5. Kendall Jenner

If you haven’t heard by now, Kendall Jenner has made a major mark on the fashion world in the past year. She walked seven big shows for NYFW Fall 2015: Donna Karan, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, and Diane von Furstenberg. Say what you will about her family, but Kendall has stood out and proven herself to be a talented model in a cutthroat industry.
