Campus Celebrities: Class of 2016 (President & Social Chair)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

Congrats to the new leaders representing the Class of 2016! Although you may be newbies to this campus, you certainly know how to grab the attention of your peers! As for your peers, they clearly know how to vote! With that being said, let’s learn a little bit more about our President, Ted Steinberg and fellow Social Chair, Devon McCarthy as we honor them as this week’s Campus Celebrities.

Name: Ted Steinberg (President)
Major: Undecided
Hometown: Boston, MA
Random Fact: I don’t swim in the ocean because I’m afraid of sharks.

Name: Devon McCarthy (Social Chair)
Major: Undecided
Hometown: West Palm Beach, FL
Random Fact: I don’t eat bacon.

Why did you want to join SGA?

Ted: I wanted to join SGA because I feel it is a great way to get involved in the community. I’ve always been involved in student government and at Conn, with shared governance, SGA gives students a strong voice.

Devon: I wanted to join SGA so I could get more involved on campus.

What are you hoping to achieve with your new position? In other words, do you have a specific goal(s)?

Ted: I want to represent the class as best as I can. I want to compile the suggestions and requests of my peers and bring them to the attention of SGA and administration.

Devon: I’m hoping to unify the freshman class even more. I have met so man people in my class, but there are so many I have yet to meet. I’m hoping as social chair I can plan exciting events that can bring us all together.

What are you most excited about in SGA?

Ted: I’m excited to get to know all the members of SGA and make positive changes in the community.

Devon: I’m excited about working with my other class representatives and attending the meetings.

What was your campaign strategy?

Ted: I tried to reach out to people on a personal level by being outgoing. I also used some baby pictures and pictures from a wedding I attended (in my dad’s tux).

Devon: My campaign strategy was quite simple: win. I had some tough competition being unopposed.

Were you ever in a leadership position in high school? What was it and how did it go?

Ted: I was the president of my high school. I really enjoyed it, I feel like I was productive and I enabled the opportunity for a more interactive student body.

Devon: I was co-head of the Breast Cancer Foundation at my school. There was a great deal of work, but I enjoyed taking on the challenge and raising money for such an important cause.

What other activities are you involved in on campus?

Ted: I am on the honor council and I play club baseball (which I recommend for people of any skill level, it’s a great time with great people).

Devon: I am on the finance committee of SAC and I am in The Look Magazine club.

How has your experience at Conn been so far?

Ted: I love it so far. Everyone here is friendly and considerate, it makes me feel at home.

Devon: I’m loving Conn so far. Everyone who I have come across has been so friendly and it is such an eclectic campus that I have met quite a variety of people.

What is your favorite part of college?

Ted: I like the independence. It’s fun to live on your own; it’s exciting.

Devon: My favorite part of college would have to be the freedom. Even though I went to boarding school, there is no one constantly telling you what to do and where to be.

What has been your most memorable experience at Conn?

Ted: I asked the chefs at the egg station if they would make me a grilled cheese. Not only did they make a phenomenal grilled cheese, they cut it diagonally just like my mom does. It made my day.

Devon: Hm, there have been a lot but probably the most memorable would be taking my roommate to the hospital to see if she had a concussion from her rugby game. Going to the emergency room is an experience in itself but going at 10:30 p.m. on a Sunday in New London makes it that much more interesting.

We can’t wait to see what you have in store for the Class of 2016!
