Name: Emily Walsh
Class Year: 2017
Hometown: Wellesley, MA
Major: Studio Art and Psychology
Extracurricular activities: Intern for CC Curtiss, PEEPS (Peer Health Educator), Student Advisory Board for Psychology, and a Research Assistant for the Psychology Department. Â
What was your summer internship?
I completed my behavioral medicine internship near my hometown of Wellesley. I interned with clinical and pain psychologists. Tasks consisted of shadowing during consultations and helping complete research on patient’s distress. Also, I sat in team discussions/meetings, mostly with pain psychologists, we read through peer-reviewed journals and viewed cases in multi-disciplinary ways so we can know how to best operate as a whole. The whole experience just further increased my love for the field.
Any memorable experience(s) during your internship?
At the end of the internship, I ended up presenting to the whole team. I loved doing all the research and learning about pain psychology because it is something that it is not taught at Conn.
How is it being one of CC’s interns?
It is really fun! I REALLY enjoy working with the other interns. The interns work very closely with PEEPS and I also love being a part of peer education. The huge events like Fresh Check Day are always a huge part of being an intern. I just think it is incredible of how big of a net that you cast in the Conn community. Also, it is interesting teaming up with different organizations on campus like the LGBTQIA Center, Unity House, and SafetyNet.
Best class you have taken so far at Conn?
Both of my majors are so different from each other so I have different preferred classes but in:
Studio art: I specialize in photography and I love all of my courses within the concentration.  Most of my classes are like independent study but with a bigger end goal. Also, I’m doing an art honors thesis so I’m heavily involved in the department.
Psychology: Psychology of Sleep with Professor Schroeder during the spring of my junior year. It was specific but never boring— I learned how to improve my sleep schedule/cycle which is crucial for college students.
Did you always know that you wanted to double major in Art and Psychology?
During high school, I wanted to be in pre-med, more especially a surgeon. When I got to Conn, I realized that I didn’t like biology. I took astronomy courses during my sophomore year and I was almost going to major in astrophysics but it involved a lot of math. I also interested in environmental science classes at one point. So, no I did not always know!
How was your study abroad experience?
I studied abroad during the fall of 2015 in Copenhagen, Denmark through the Danish Institute for Study Abroad. It was a program that I could take classes from both the art and psychology departments. Classes were in English with Danish professors so it was cool to see how different the Danish learning style was from Conn. Â
Intended job position and after graduation plans?
Go into psychology, take some time off and do research. I would like to go to grad school eventually and study pain psychology.  I’m looking forward to being able to use what I learned at Conn in the real world. Live on my own. Also, putting everything into action.
