Movie Guide: November 2014

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cornell chapter.

With winter quickly approaching and gray skies clouding the end of sparkling summer, the season of gorge swimming and plantations hikes is rapidly drawing to a close. Fortunately, sunshine (or gloom) is always available when it comes to the silver screen. Thanks to the ever-prolific Hollywood factory, the following gems will make the perfect cure for snowed-in blues.

For the SciFi Buff…

Interstellar, November 7th

Matthew McConaughey seems to have quite the propensity for saving the human race. In this action-packed flick, he must surpass the bounds of human space travel to combat Earth’s fleeting light. Similar to the epic space journey in Bruce Willis’ infamous Armageddon, this tale combines an examination of the future of human discovery with the deep human bond of a man dedicated to forging a better life for his children. Interstellar will offer both the thrill of cutting-edge special effects and the tear-provoking hope forged from post-apocalyptic despair.

For the Kid at Heart…

Big Hero 6, November 7th

Nothing like taking your mind off another round of prelims with a flashback to the days when you longed to grow-up. Thanks to the creative powerhouses who brought you Frozen, an unlikely team of a robot (resembling a marshmallow on steroids), Baymax, and his slightly more human counterpart, Hiro Hamada, team up to create a new generation of super heroes: those for the technology era.

For the Sports Fanatic…

Foxcatcher, November 14th

Besides being 134 minutes based around Channing Tatum is wresting attire, Foxcatcher delves into the relationship between a coach and his prodigy. Steve Carell portrays illustrious sponsor, John de Pont, who strives to establish a world-class training facility around the talents of his mentee, Mark Schultz (Tatum). Brimming with drama and gripping intensity, this sports biography is already in the Oscar-buzz limelight going into awards season.

For the “Girl on Fire”…

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1, November 21st

How could I discuss upcoming cinema without calling out the next installment of our most beloved trilogy? Alas, the wait is almost over. The end of Catching Fire left us drooling; Peeta kidnapped to the capital? District 13 is more than just a myth? Heavensby, an ally? Mockingjay Part 1 promises to be packed with Katniss’ panache and impassioned flames as she takes on the almighty capital to pursue justice and right Panem.

For Comedic Relief…

Horrible Bosses 2, November 26th

Dale, Kurt and Nick are back with a new way to handle the pressures of being in the workface: being their own boss. Armed with their newly minted “Shower Buddy”, an invention poised to be the next big thing, they are crushed to soon find that they have been beaten to the punch. Horrible Bosses 2 exposes an elaborate plan to regain control, including a kidnapping scheme predicated on the advice of world’s worst criminal, Jamie Foxx.
