As a self-proclaimed music nerd, I’m always excited to stumble upon artists that are doing new things and pushing genre boundaries. My taste in music has always been a little weird, including everything from Broadway musicals to 70’s rock to singer-songwriter staples. I’m obsessed with production and the evolution of music, and current state of affairs in the music industry is incredible for those who share that interest. These three artists are creating incredible original work and pushing the boundaries of genre every day.
1. Desure
Desure is one of those artists that you just can’t get enough of, no matter how much you listen to him. From the second I heard “Los Angeles,” I was hooked. He is a true storyteller, and every song is the perfect snapshot of a moment in time. His music invokes a feeling of wanderlust, like driving down a highway in the middle of nowhere with the windows down.
Desure is on tour currently with country band Midland.
2. Dagny
I first encountered Dagny while watching the Freeform show The Bold Type and was in awe of her cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” The arrangement of such an often-covered classic is genuinely unique and bittersweet, and I’ve loved her music ever since. Her music feels raw, like a true testament to the millennial experience, but still manages to stay light and fun.
Dagny is currently on tour in Northern Europe.
3. Sampha
Sampha works in all creative aspects of the music industry, as a singer, songwriter, and producer. He has worked with the likes of Solange and Drake as well as creating a large catalog of original work. I was first introduced to his work through Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet’s film “Beautiful Boy,” in which his song “Treasure” was one of the leading singles on the soundtrack. Sampha is an artist and a storyteller, and each of his songs is a completely different experience than the next. His modern yet ethereal style provides the perfect soundtrack for any mood.
Sampha’s album “Process” is out now.
These three artists are doing incredible things for the music industry and are creating new, innovative work. I, for one, am a major fan and cannot wait to keep following their careers.
