As the first female-led Marvel movie hits the box office, it’s time to take a look at what it means for the franchise and how the movie was on its own. I came into this movie truly only knowing that Captain Marvel is supposed to be the most powerful being in the universe, and the key to infinity war. I knew nothing of her backstory or character, so my expectations were kind of nonexistent. Firstly, I loved Brie Larson, she was such a badass in this movie. She’s so arrogant, not going to be your friend, but is going to save the day (obviously). She was always told she couldn’t do something or that she wasn’t as good as a boy, and time and time again she got up on her feet, I loved how they showed that. There wasn’t a lot of character arch though, which would have made the audience care for her more. It was nice that they showed how human she can be, though.
I thought that I was predicting everything, and they actually kept me on my toes with a pretty good twist. The villains were well thought out and acted, I really enjoyed the intensity of it. Personally it was a little too much alien stuff for me, but that’s just the name of the game. I loved all of the girl power, but it didn’t override the film. I even thought that Wonder Woman told a more impactful story of female empowerment than this, because Captain Marvel was so confident in herself the whole time.
They took Nick Fury to a more human place which was great, especially at this point in the series. I also loved Goose the kitty. They had a bunch of nods towards aircraft knowledge, like in Blockbuster when she picked up The Right Stuff, and naming her cat Goose, it was fun to see the human side of her showing through. I was entertained, not blown away. It was nice to get away from the Avengers and see how much ground work she laid down so they are able to do what they do. I don’t necessarily understand how she is going to be the key to saving the day, but I believe it. This is important, this is empowering, I recommend it. Also, the Stan Lee tributes will hit your feels, hard. Hell yea to the Marvel Universe shining a spotlight on badass women.
Thanks imdb for the awesome photos, I hope you enjoyed reading and see the movie!
