Every now and then, I’ll hear a song that tickles the little worm that lives in my brain and it will be the only thing I listen to for days (at least) on end. I don’t really know why I get in moods like this, but I do know that I love music, and switching up the soundtrack to my life can be fun, especially when I sprinkle in my old favorites. This weekend, the unthinkable happened, and I added these eight songs to my library.

PLAN B – MEGAN THEE STALLION

This song comes from Megan’s latest album, Traumazine. I think Megan Thee Stallion is a really unique and awesome individual, joining a highly competitive group of existing female rappers like Nicki Minaj and Cardi B (who are both cool) and still managing to stand out with songs reminiscent of 90s rap. “Plan B” is a song about independence and realizing one’s own power and worth! LADIES, LOVE YOURSELF!

Favorite lyric: “Ladies, love yourself ‘cause this shit could get ugly / That’s why it’s ‘Fuck [men], get money’”

MAROON – TAYLOR SWIFT

Like everyone else, I listened to Taylor Swift’s new album track by track, and if I’m completely honest, this song gives off strong Pisces vibes. Pisces are really dreamy and sentimental people, and this whole song is just longing for things to feel the way they once did when things were good. Even if it’s not a romantic relationship, you can feel the same sadness drifting away from someone who meant the world to you. Ugh, it makes me feel kind of melancholy just thinking about it.

Favorite lyric: “Carnations you thought were roses / That was us / I feel you / No matter what”

INSTANT CRUSH – DAFT PUNK

If you know me, you know I love songs that have a good rise and fall, and “Instant Crush” is FULL of those gradually building chords and lyrics that give me chills. I also think Daft Punk are really creative and thoughtful lyricists, and I think the story told in this song is one that a lot of people can relate to about missed opportunities and trying to move on.

Favorite lyric: “I listened to your problems / Now listen to mine”

SPREAD THIN – MARIAH THE SCIENTIST

It is lovely to see the world in rose-colored glasses. It is not so lovely when you realize things are not as glamorous as you had hoped, and you are left to clean up a mess that you did not expect to exist. People are not always who they say they are and sometimes things you had high hopes for don’t turn out the way they were expected to. I like to think that this song is a reminder that there’s only one person whose love and approval you should be seeking out: your own!

Favorite lyric: “How I may never see you again / I hate when summer ends / But it always would / And you’ll always be disappointed”

HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY – JOHNNY CASH

Am I the only person who really enjoys sad songs? To me, being able to feel the passion or heartache or pain in an artist’s music is the mark of a really powerful song that’s more than just a catchy tune. Sad songs tell stories, and this one is no different. I patiently await the day that someone loves me as much as the protagonist of this song loves his woman. This song makes me cry.

Favorite lyric: “Kept some letters by his bed / Dated 1962 / He had underlined in red / Every single ‘I love you’”

7 WEEKS & 3 DAYS – YUNGATITA

Now that I’m writing out how all these songs make me feel and what they mean to me, I think I’m starting to see a little bit of a recurring theme. I heard this song on TikTok, and I really liked it, so I added it to my playlist. The repetitiveness of the lyrics emphasizes their confusion. I think I am a really emotional and compassionate person, and I know what it feels like to get wrapped up in the confusion of feeling like I’m not good enough or I could have done more.

Favorite lyric: “And even though you run me out dry / I still think you’re a decent guy / Why?”

KARMA – TAYLOR SWIFT

As a big believer in putting good energy out into the universe to get good energy back, “Karma” has a fun, upbeat vibe with meaningful lyrics. I really like how Taylor described her karma as wonderful things in her life. I think karma has come to me in the beautiful forms of my close friends, career opportunities, and living in a beautiful place, among other things. I am really grateful for karma’s gifts and I definitely respect karma’s lessons.

Favorite lyric: “Trick me once / Trick me twice / Don’t you know cash ain’t the only price?”

LEMON TREE – POST MALONE

Another melancholy song graces this list; however, I want to tell Post Malone that the grass is always greener on the other side! I think it is very valid to feel bitter or sad about things that didn’t meet expectations, but I am glad that the message of knocking everything down and starting over again is also fair.

Favorite lyric: “Some people got an apple / Some people got a tangerine / Look around and all I see / Is people happy with what they’re given”

This many songs will probably never pique my interest in such a short time span again, so I had to share. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do! :)
