10 best commentary channels to watch when you have nothing better to do

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CWU chapter.

Whether it be when I’m getting ready in the morning or cleaning my room, it seems I always gravitate toward the ever-growing commentary community on YouTube. I’ve even found that recently it helps to have commentary videos on as background noise when I’m doing my schoolwork. So what channels should you watch if you want to see what the many different categories of YouTube commentary videos have to offer? Well, this is the article for you! I’ve provided a rundown of my favorite commentary creators on the platform and a bit about each one of them so you can find the right creator for you! (I’ve also linked my personal favorite videos from each channel).

1. Ted Nivison https://www.youtube.com/c/TedNivison

Getting his start in the Minecraft and Gaming section of YouTube, Ted Nivison rose to fame through the “Solitary Confinement” podcast, run by a popular YouTuber by the name of CallMeCarson. From there he began making content about various topics, such as Reviewing Off-Brand Movies, Cooking with a Twist, Instagram quotes and “Milk-Based” content. He posts feel-good, genuine content about whatever he finds the funniest at the moment of filming, which has the potential to appeal to a wide range of people. It is truly difficult to properly explain Ted’s niche on YouTube because he does whatever he wants, which is respectable and wonderfully hilarious.

Ted currently sits at 1.61 Million Subscribers.

2.iNabber https://www.youtube.com/c/iNabber

Frasier, more commonly known as the YouTuber iNabber, is a European-based content creator who usually focuses on social media-based issues. With videos ranging from pop-culture moments to TikTok & YouTube controversies, he dives deep into the nitty-gritty of each issue flawlessly, making sure to add his own personal take from an emotional standpoint. He puts a huge emphasis on the acknowledgment of mental health in all of these cases, which is especially admirable. His most recent videos focus on the Try Guys cheating scandal (if you haven’t checked out my previous article on the SNL try guys sketch, go check that out!).

3. Boze v. The World https://www.youtube.com/c/bozeybozington

Okay, okay, yes. I was a huge fan of Smosh and Smosh Games in my adolescence, but it lead directly to this creator who has become one of my favorites for my morning wake-up. Boze has been on YouTube for a long time, most notably as a Smosh Games member in the late 2010s. After leaving the company in 2019, she began her own channel on YouTube and Twitch, a popular gaming live-streaming website. Her content focuses on true crime cases and “Karen” moments. Her videos range from half an hour to 6-hour true crime binges that she makes for people who want something playing in the background of their housework or day-to-day lives.

One of the most popular creators mentioned in this article, CodyKo has been on the platform making videos since 2014. His videos mostly feature his reactions to popular Cut videos (another popular company on YouTube) and reading different Reddit submissions. He also has a podcast with a fellow creator, Noel Miller, where they talk about hilarious pop-culture moments. His most popular uploads also happen to feature Noel, with a series titled: “That’s Cringe” where the two comment on different “cringe” YouTube videos. He also features his fiance, Kelsey, in some couple’s reaction videos; one such series is titled “Tinder Nightmares” where they read different tinder moments submitted by fans.

5. Cruel World Happy Mind https://www.youtube.com/c/MadisonHarnish

Madison, or as we know her on YouTube, Cruel World Happy Mind, is a smaller content creator on YouTube, but she deserves so much more credit. She is highly underrated on the platform, putting huge effort into all of her videos. Madison creates in-depth docu-style storytelling videos about YouTubers and TikTok stars and their various controversies. With her most popular video featuring Gabbie Hanna’s story and her rise and fall on the website having 5.4 million views, she provides all the facts needed to understand what’s going on at one moment in time and why the behavior is problematic.

6. NickIsNotGreen https://www.youtube.com/c/nickisnotgreen

Nick is a more recent addition to the YouTube commentary community, starting out in 2016 and becoming most popular with the Sameer Bhavnani drama. He posts hot takes about Gen Z humor and culture, as well as left-wing political commentary, criticizing conservative statements that aim to do harm to the LGBTQ+ community. One such video features Nick reacting to a popular Christian conservative couple making fun of how Disneyland changed the statement before the popular firework show from “boys and girls” to “dreamers.” He speaks his mind, which is what many of his viewers admire strongly. Nick also has a popular podcast on Spotify called The Fellowship Covenant Podcast.

7. Drew Gooden https://www.youtube.com/c/DrewGooden1

Drew started on vine in the early 2010s, with his most notable vines being quoted even to this day (“Road work ahead? Uh, yeah, I sure hope it does!”). Starting his channel in the early years of the website, he’s been creating content since 2006. His videos commonly stick to the same type of videos, such as reacting to terrible Amazon Prime movies and buying odd products to test out. He makes content with other famous vine-to-YouTube creators such as Danny Gonzales and previously mentioned, NickIsNotGreen. His monotone voice and laid-back style make for a hilarious and feel-good watching experience.

Drew as of right now has 3.85 Million Subscribers.

8. Tea Spill https://www.youtube.com/c/TeaSpillOnYoutube/videos

Similar to Cruel World Happy Mind, Tea Spill features content in an in-depth style. The videos on their channel mostly consist of recent YouTube and pop culture dramas. With most videos being 10+ minutes in duration, the content provides faceless commentary on the facts of each case, perfect for a quick catch-up on all things pop culture. They stay up-to-date on new things happening in the media, with a new video coming out every week or so. Chad Chad is a popular classic-style commentary YouTuber, with videos formatted with her seated at a desk with a visible mic speaking her mind on various TikTok issues. Similar to NickIsNotGreen, she puts an emphasis on the ridiculous trends and issues surrounding Gen Z culture. She also posts sarcastic responses to misogynistic issues on YouTube and TikTok, with my personal favorite video featuring her firing back at recent Andrew Tate comments. Chad Chad provides a hilarious hot take on many strange trends and creates a space where people can feel free to express their opinions on cringe-worthy content on popular platforms.

10. Swoop https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqHZdrDcZhhRO11m67Tgz4A

Featuring docu-style content, Swoop is a commentary youtuber that dives deep into the mental aspects of big cases on YouTube and TikTok. Most of her videos are 45+ minutes and have a lot of information on popular cases in the public eye. Swoop has had a long history of mental health advocacy and is very real about how she expresses herself on her channel, posting commentary as well as her own short films. My favorite of her videos features an in-depth review of the Ace Family and their problematic content and events. She also, similar to Boze v. The World, reviews popular court and legal cases, posting one such video going over the hugely infamous Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard case.

All of these creators produce different kinds of content unique to them, which is something I’ve always found so interesting about the commentary sphere on Youtube. There is so much readily available information about the world as we know it on youtube, and I’ve found these creators provide the most entertaining content for whatever situation you find yourself in. Be it cleaning or getting ready, or even, in my case, doing your schoolwork, you’re bound to enjoy at least one of these creators.

I'm so excited to take you along with me on my journey through college as I attempt to navigate this big ol' scary world! So excited to see what Her Campus has to offer, and I hope you enjoy my work!
