Most of us enjoyed reading fun and imaginative books as a child. It created a space for us to be whoever or whatever we wanted to be. I think it’s safe to say that many of us as the years went on, lost interest in reading for fun. Maybe it had something to do with the endless assigned books for English classes over the years, or not being able to find an interesting book. For those book lovers that want to get back into reading, I’ve compiled a simple list. My list consists of quick reads that are interesting enough to keep you hooked from beginning to end.Â
The Year of Blue Water by Yanyi — Easy ReadÂ
This book is a beautiful collection of poems that weave together a heart-wrenching story of a transgender immigrant battling to be accepted by his family. Yanyi is a wonderful storyteller and this book will definitely spark many emotions.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller — Intermediate ReadÂ
If romance is your thing, then this is the book for you! This book tells a beautiful love story of the great Achilles, and his awkward lover Patroclus. It takes a lot for a book to bring me to tears, but this one did it!
Jacob, Have I loved? By Katherine Paterson — Easy Read
This book is a young adult classic for a reason. This is the story of two twin sisters that are at odds, well at least one of them is. Louise, the not so golden child, is battling to be seen and heard by everyone. I loved this book when I first read it a decade ago, and I still reach for it when I need a quick read.Â
The Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent —Intermediate ReadÂ
I had to include a great thriller in the list, as that’s my favorite genre. If the story of a kidnapped girl hiding in plain sight, and excellent detective work interests you, then I highly recommend this book. This is NOT your average thriller, as the plot only continues to get harder to figure out.
I hope some of these books spark an interest within you and that you can eventually find yourself reading for fun again!
