Grocery shopping can be a daunting task, as there are many options to choose from. From the chocolate-covered popcorn on sale to the rotisserie chicken you are tempted to pick up for dinner, it can be difficult to stick to a budget or list while shopping.
As a grocery store bagger with the tendencies of an impulsive shopper, I have spent more than I have intended to at the grocery store. Because of these tendencies, I often have to convince myself not to purchase an item I don’t need. I also find that I can reduce the cost of my groceries and become less of an impulsive shopper by incorporating a few techniques while grocery shopping.Â
1. Shop store brands
While name brands may be tempting, store brands are the same item but for cheaper price. Instead of purchasing name brands such as Dole, Heinz, or Breyers, look into purchasing the store brands Remember, that store brands are different for each store, so check in with your store to see what the brands are.Â
2. avoid the middle
Venturing into the middle of the store, as tempting as it is, can lead you to purchase items you don’t need. Because of shopping in the middle of the store, you can find yourself going over budget for groceries. Instead, shop the perimeter of the store, which usually includes anything from produce, dairy, meat, and bread.Â
3. Stick to the list
One of the best ways to manage a budget while grocery shopping is making a list and sticking to it. Before going grocery shopping, make a list of the items you need from the store and check off those items as you shop. Sticking to a list not only makes your trip to the grocery store a lot faster, but it also can prevent you from buying things on impulse.
