Valentine’s Day calls for a romcom marathon. No matter your age or relationship status, you can always find joy in the simple sweetness of a romantic comedy.
If you’re looking for one to watch this February 14, here are some of the best choices for you.
13 Going on 30 – The romcom for everyone
This movie is the first one that comes to mind when I hear the words “Romantic Comedy.” It is a true classic that everyone can enjoy, even the rom-com haters. 13 going on 30 is an easy watch, but will still pull on your heartstrings.
Bridget Jones’s Diary – The romcom for the unlucky in love
Bridget Jones reigns champion as the most relatable protagonist. She is admittedly a bit of a hot mess, and simply doesn’t know what she’s doing in love and life. Neither Mark Darcy or Daniel Cleaver are excellent love interests, but Bridget herself carries the movie. If you find yourself dreading Valentine’s Day, grab some friends and a tub of ice cream, and watch this movie.
He’s Just Not That Into You – The romcom for the Valentine’s skeptic
This movie also follows multiple storylines of people who can’t seem to grasp love. If you hate sappy tropes, look no further. This movie does have some romantic aspects, but the main theme is more about self-love. The main characters learn to stop basing their self-worth on relationships, and let go of their self-comparisons.
Love Actually – The romcom for the hopeless romantic
Okay, I know this is technically a Christmas movie, but hear me out. Love Actually follows multiple story lines, each one showcasing love’s many forms. This movie always makes me appreciate the types of love that aren’t so obviously present in life. If you’re a romantic at heart, this one’s for you.
10 Things I Hate About You – The romcom for Miss Independent
This movie is perfect for just about everyone, but it especially appeals to those who love their independence. Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona are a match made in heaven, and that is not up for debate. It came out in the late 90s, and it is simply timeless. This movie is perfect for those who wouldn’t call themselves romantic, but still love Valentine’s festivities.
Some honourable mentions, in no particular order, include: Mamma Mia, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, A Cinderella Story, and Just Go with It.
