How to Find The Time to Read for Fun

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

It’s always nice to curl up with a good book that you’re reading just for the fun of it. You don’t need to note important passages in it, analyze anything, or try and skim the whole book in one hour because you forgot to look at the syllabus! But when you have tons of assigned reading already, finding time to read for pleasure can be tricky. Here are a few tips to make it easier.

1) Pick the right type of book

Odds are, you’ll be reading bits of pieces of this book whenever you can. That’s why it’s good to pick a book of short stories for your pleasure reading. The Opposite of Loneliness by Marina Keegan is a great one written by a college-aged student.

2) Read it on your phone

If you have an Amazon account and a smartphone, you can read books on your phone. Just download the Kindle app, and any books you buy digitally on Amazon will be sent there. This format is great because it allows you to fill the time you’d usually spend mindlessly scrolling through social media reading a book. You’ll be amazed how fast you can finish a book this way.

3) Listen to it on audiobooks

Audible is another service offered by Amazon that allows you to listen to audiobooks with a monthly fee, kind of like Netflix. Audiobooks are great for working out or car rides. Is Everybody Hanging out Without Me (And Other Concerns) written and read by Mindy Kaling, is lighthearted and hilarious – perfect for pleasure reading

4) Dedicate a time

Try telling yourself that for 10 minutes right before you go to bed every night, you’ll read something just for fun. This can be a great way to relax a little before bed, and 10 minutes a day can really add up.
