As a freshman, self-selection day is one of the most fun days at Davidson, but also one of the weirdest. Coming into self-selection I had no idea what to expect, but it was better than I could have ever imagined. So here are 7 weird things that happened on self-selection day.
1. Happily waking up before 7 a.m.
Everyone on my hall was awake by 6:30 a.m., but the weirdest part was they all looked happy. Instead of the normal mutually depressed stare down I usually have with the hallmates this early in the morning, everyone was smiling and excited for the day ahead.
2. Screaming in an upperclassmen’s face and snatching a t-shirt out of her hand.
At exactly 7 a.m., I heard Turner on my hall. Since it was my first-choice house, I got up hoping they would knock on my door. Seconds later I heard the loudest pounding and ripped the door opened. When I saw a sophomore member of Turner I proceeded to scream in her face like I was in pain while at the same time snatching a shirt out of her hand. Let’s just say she thinks I’m a little weird.
3. Having a fun dance party at 7 a.m.
I never had a dance party so early, but I now know marties (morning parties) are the best. The excitement of the day kept me going, but to be completely honest the bottom half of my body was still asleep. Yeah, there was a lot of swaying.
4. Commons being completely full.
Going to Commons on self-selection day is like no other. I had never seen Commons so packed. I actually had to walk around for a couple minutes before I saw an empty chair. The best part of the breakfast was seeing all the houses scream their cheers. Yeah girl power!!
5. Being treated like a human ice cream sundae.
I was nervous for toppings at first. How was it going to feel to be covered in chocolate and sprinkles? Well, it actually feels amazing. Well, amazing and sticky (very sticky). The best part was opening your mouth while the older member sprayed you with chocolate.
6. Physically fighting for a shower afterward.
After toppings, my friends and I sprinted up the hill to claim a shower. As soon as we got into Belk we were met by the head of RLO looking at us like we were crazy and handing us plastic bags. Even though I sprinted up to my hall for the first time ever, all the showers were full. I stood in the bathroom drenched in chocolate and sprinkles for 5 minutes before finally getting to wash off.
7. Realizing that you are now a part of a great sisterhood.
The night of self-selection, it still had not hit me that I was now a part of Turner. Not only was I going to be able to go to their amazing parties, but also eat their food twice a week!!!
You will remember this weird day for the rest of your life!
