‘Everybody’s to blame; Nobody’s to blame’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DCU chapter.

Who here is fed up of being generalised? It seems as though anything that goes wrong in the generation above than us lives, us millennial’s are blamed.

Which is odd, seeing as we aren’t the ones that have kicked global warming into overdrive, nor did we cause a recession in our country.

I admit we can be arrogant and think we know everything, especially since we grew up with smart phones and can google the answer to everything.

Even when I was researching for this article millennial’s were being blamed for the drop in cheese sales in America.. Really? Fair enough, we are a generation whereby we are more conscience of what we use and eat, such as being vegan is not only a popular fad, but a sustainable life choice.

It’s the same among the Irish farmer, with less eating red meat, the millennial generation is automatically put on trial as to why we don’t want more methane gases produced in the world.

What I find ironic is that we aren’t the first generation to be criticised, every generation before us has. From for flower power 60’s to tech wiz addicts of 2018, there is constant competition between generations.

Whether it’s the fact that there is jealousy from the elders to thinking the youth of today’s lives are so easy because when they were young they were out earning from the time they were walking.

But us millennial’s could say the same, they got to live in an era where newspapers were big in the hard copy and they had it easier to get into a job. Nowadays it seems you need four degrees, two masters and a PHD to get anywhere.

I agree with the fact that our generation is completely immersed in the world which is almost fully online, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t live in the ‘real world’. Yes, we use it as an escape, but who doesn’t need something to get us out of the terrors of the world we live in today.

Our generation isn’t the only one that is addicted to the online world might I just add. Although our lives are nearly always on show on this online platform, it doesn’t cause us to be rude or ignorant. So please, to those who say it’s the online world that has cause rudeness in the millennial’s – It’s not! Some people are just rude, both young and old alike.

I am sick of other generations saying that our generation has no interest in working, because that is ‘fake news’. I know people in my course working over 20 hours a week while being in college full-time.

Yes, there is millennial’s that don’t work, but there was people in other generations that didn’t work either. These are only part of the reasons I’m sick of being generally blamed.

Other generations weren’t angels either, they did cause a hole in the O-Zone layer after all.
