Most Iconic Oscar Red Carpets Dresses of All Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DCU chapter.

The Academy Awards took place last Sunday and its safe to say that it was one to remember. The fashion othe night certainly didn’t disappoint with stunning dresses from Ralph & Russo, Valentino, Versace and so many more. However, all the red carpet looks remind me of some of the most iconic Oscar dresses and how they have made fashion history. So sit back and enjoy, as I’m going to take you through some of the iconic red carpet dresses of all time.

Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly is truly a fashion icon that will all aspire to. She never ceases to amaze us her poise and elegance. That is no different when it comes to the red carpet. In 1955, Grace Kelly wore a baby blue gown by Edith Heath. Looking at Kelly she looked like a real-life Cinderella.

Audrey Hepburn

If we are talking about the Academy Awards, its nearly not to mention the unforgettable actress that was Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn always carried herself with such grace and beauty that its no shock to anyone why she wouldn’t make this list. In the 1954 Hepburn steals the show in her timeless Givenchy dress.

In 2006 Reese Witherspoon won her first ever Academy Award for her role in the John Cash biopic, Walk the Line, in which she delivered a jaw-dropping performance. Witherspoon wore a stunning Vintage Christian Dior dress with a fully beaded skirt.

Saoirse Ronan

Last year Saoirse Ronan was nominated for breath-taking performance in Brooklyn and she took the red carpet look very stylish and elegant. Ronan wore a Calvin Klein emerald sequined dress, linking to her Irish heritage.

Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o rose to fame for the chilling performance in 12 Years a Slave. Not only was she awarded for her unforgettable performance but she looked flawless. She wore a powder blue Prada gown and looked effortless. It was the perfection dress for the perfect performance.

Angelina Jolie

If there is one woman that disappoints at the Oscars it certainly is Angelina Jolie. Any red carpet event she attends, she looks simply divine. There’s rarely anything this woman looks bad in. But I can’t not mention one of the most iconic dresses she ever has worn. This is the black Versace dress she wore the 2012 Academy Awards, where she showed off her stunning legs. This is one of the few dresses that springs to mind when I think of the Oscars and will always remain in the Oscar Red Carpet Hall of Fame.

Gwyneth Paltrow

In 1999 Gwyneth Paltrow walked the red carpet in a beautiful baby pink Ralph Lauren ball gown. She looked simply stunning in this dress and paired it with simple diamond necklace and matching earrings. Paltrow resembled a princess and her look remains iconic to this day.

Penelope Cruz

This Spanish beauty will always be remembered for the beautiful white and embellished dress she wore the 2009 Oscars. Penelope Cruz is wearing Vintage Pierre Balmain, which we don’t usually see at the Oscars. With her hair tied up and her diamond accessories, she looks like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn.

 Nicole Kidman

The final outfit in the list belongs to none other than Nicole Kidman. Kidman is always dressed in the most stylish outfits, especially during awards season but the dress she wore in 2007 was gorgeous. Kidman wore a red high dress with a train from Balenciaga. The bright colour of the dress and unique neck train put Kidman straight on this list!
