Top 5 Favourite Lyrics From 1989 (Taylor’s Version) Vault Tracks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DCU chapter.

‘1989’, the album that never goes ‘Out of Style’.

Taylor Swift unveiled her fourth re-released album ‘1989’(Taylor’s Version) on October 27th, nine years after she first dropped her original iconic pop album that secured her transition from country to pop music all those years ago.

Like every other re-released ‘Taylor’s Version’ album released thus far, the album features five ‘From the Vault tracks’ (tracks that didn’t make the cut in the original production), and it is fair to assume that these tracks did not disappoint!

1989 is quite possibly one of Taylor’s best albums, holding that twinkly feeling that could put you in a trance, it is impossible to not sing along to the songs. With tracks such as ‘Wildest Dreams’, ‘Style’ and ‘Blank Space”, It was a hard ‘act’ for the vault tracks to follow, However they most certainly did not disappoint.

Taylor Swift gifted us with Five love lust tracks that provide us with a whole new perspective on her life at that time (2014). These tracks include “Slut!”, “Say Don’t Go”, “Now That We Don’t Talk”,  “Suburban Legends” and finally “Is it Over Now”.

The lyrics on these tracks are nothing short of poetry as Swift shows off her impressive hand at writing once again. Here are our 5 favourite lyrics from the tracks.

“Slut!”

Like “Blank Space”, “Slut!” references the slut-shaming Taylor faced during this period of her life. However, instead of her satirical approach in “Blank Space”, in “Slut!” Taylor embraces it in a way that is accepting but also allows herself not to care, as long as she was with ‘the one’

Honourable Mention: “If they call me a slut, you know it might be worth it for once / If I’m gonna be drunk, might as well be drunk in love,”

Best lyric: “Being this young is art.”

“Say Don’t Go”

“Say Don’t Go”, is a song for everyone out there that has fallen victim to the empty feeling of being vulnerable and lost in a relationship. The song closely resembles the instrumentals in her previous 1989 song “Clean”, acting as a link to that story.

Best lyric: “Why’d you have to lead me on?/ Why you’d have to twist the knife?/ Walk away and leave me bleedin’, bleedin’?/ Why’d you whisper in the dark/Just to leave me in the night?/Now your silence has me screamin’, screamin’”

“Now That We Don’t Talk”

When Swifties first heard of the rerelease of 1989, there were high hopes of a collaboration, particularly with a certain someone who is heavily referenced throughout the album (*Cough Cough* Harry Styles…). However the Harry Styles feature we got was in fact not in “Style” but as a muse for tracks like  “Now That We Don’t Talk”. This is Swift’s shortest song yet, coming in at only 2 and a half minutes but she has certainly managed to pack in the catchy  lyrics.

Best lyric: “You grew your hair long/ You got new icons/ And from the outside/ It looks like you’re tryin’ lives on/ I miss the old ways/ You didn’t have to change”

“Is it Over Now”

With its suggestive allusion again to her relationship with Harry Styles, these lyrics add a new layer of meaning that completely contrasts against the fan favorite original song “Style” that celebrates their iconic match. The song also references another 1989 song “Out of the Woods” that is also rumoured to be about Mr. Styles with its lyrics “When you lost control/ Red blood, white snow/ Blue dress on a boat” vs. “Remember when you hit the brakes too soon?/ Twenty stitches in a hospital room”.

Honourable Mention: “You search in every model’s bed for something greater” (Notice the change in wording from maiden to model here? …)

Best Lyric: “Only rumors ’bout my hips and thighs/ And my whispered sighs/ Oh Lord, I think about jumping/ Off of very tall somethings/ Just to see you come running/ And say the one thing I’ve been wanting/ But no”

“Suburban Legends”

If we are being honest this is probably the least favourable out of the vault tracks, Nonetheless that does not mean it is not good! While “Suburban Legends” is a lot softer of a track to its pop sounding counterparts, this song has some of the most relatable lyrics out of the lot.

Honourable Mention: “And you kiss me in a way that’s gonna screw me up forever”

Best Lyric: “I broke my own heart ’cause you were too polite to do it”

It is safe to say that Taylor Swift most certainly did not disappoint with this rerelease, an iconic album that was hard to top and yet we see her rise above the stations once more. These could quite possibly be her best Vault tracks yet and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
