UDAB (University of Delaware Alternative Breaks) is a program where students at the University of Delaware go on service learning trips during the week of Spring Break to make a difference in the world. This is UDAB’s fourth year on campus, and the program is bigger than ever.
This year, trips include working with Habitat for Humanity and the National Relief Network to provide disaster relief for certain areas throughout the country, working with Cass Community Social Services on various service projects centered around poverty, homelessness and hunger issues in the Detroit area, working with the Farm Alliance of Baltimore to prepare urban farms for the growing season, working with the Urban Tree Connection in Philadelphia, PA to reclaim an abandoned lot to create a garden for local community members, working with the Gesundheit! Institute to learn about holistic hospitals–a non-traditional, patient-centered healthcare system, and medical access and affordability, and working with the non-profit family development center Bright Beginnings, which provides education to homeless preschool children.
These students have gone through extensive application and interview processes to be able to go on these trips, and are truly making a difference in the world.
On Wednesday, November 20th, all of the participants had the opportunity to write as many letters as they could to family and friends asking for donations for their trip. All donations go directly to the costs of the trip, and help lower the cost of the trip for the students.
If you would like to help out these amazing students, You can give online donations at www.udel.edu/makeagift — just be sure to note “UDaB” in the “Other” designation field. You can also give over the phone by calling the Office of Annual Giving at 866-535-4504 (don’t forget to mention that you want to support UDaB). If your company matches gifts, please be sure to send in your information as soon as possible.
