The Bold Lip Blizzard: Fashion in a Snowstorm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.

The Bold Lip Blizzard

It may seem like only snow and ice are conquering Denison University, but let me assure you there is a greater force bombarding campus than this blizzard. This week the bold lip has captured our campus. I have seen more students with red lips than crunches. Yes, with all that black ice, crunches and casts were also a major trend on campus this week.  Although I wasn’t seeing a great variety of the color with the casts, just the same banal black, otherwise I probably would of capitalized on this trend.

The cult of the bold lip on campus was a delightful surprise. I was impressed with the number of students who bravely ventured into the terrain of bright lipstick. The pursuit of creating a bright lip ranks next to succeeding in the task of donning a seductive smoky eye. The multiple layers it requires, the creaminess of the lipstick, and the vividness of the color make achieving a bold lip demanding. As with most aspects of life that are a bit challenging yet rewarding, the end result of a bright lip outshines the exacting effort it took to create it.

So what is exactly is this laborious process of making a bold lip? Well, first let’s go over how to not make things more difficult than they already are.

Rule Number One: Do NOT use a lipstick that is delightfully creamy and easy to put on. The more moisturizing the lipstick seems the more likely it is to smear all over your face. Additionally, don’t try to resurrect that lipstick that you placed next to the heater or left too long in the sun. This red, overheated lipstick will literally bleed from the corners of your mouth. From personal experience, it’s best to trash that lipstick that got heat stroke. Trust me it won’t make a recovery, and will make you look like a clown at best.

Rule Number Two: Do NOT go without a lip liner. Not wearing liner with a bold lip, is like not using paddles when canoeing. It’s possible to do, but be widely ineffective.

Rule Number Three: Do NOT just lazily throw one layer on. You have to be meticulous when succeeding at a bold lip. This means powdering, coating, and dabbing, multiple times! Willpower is key. First you, powder your lips with a powder base foundation. The powder serves the same purpose as a hair gel, it holds and preserves you bright lip. Next, bring your beautiful lips to life with that touch of brightness. Lastly, dab your lips to take off any excess of lipstick. Coco’s advice on style can be used here. Remember to take off one article of clothing before heading out the door! In this case, remove one layer of coating before stepping out.

Rule Number Four: Do NOT wear eyeliner or heavy eye shadow with this look. You are accentuating the beauty of your lips with a bold lipstick. If you choose a radiant red, your lips will steal the show. There is no need to ignite a battle for the limelight with a heavy eye. Let your lips take all the glory, and let them shine!

For a person who detests guidelines and largely doesn’t believe in following How To’s, I think I gave you enough rules to perfecting a bold lip. But, there is still one piece of critique you need to meet if you want to succeed at this look. You must wear a bold lip with confidence. In other words, if you try a bold lip and it doesn’t complement your beauty than don’t embrace it. Never force yourself to embody fads that don’t agree with you, even if they are the HOTTEST ones. Personally, I love a bold lip on other people but not on me. I tend to take pride in eyes and highlight them with a bold look. Only pay mind to those beauty tips that fulfill your desires!
