A First Year’s Guide to Greek Mixers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.
A Freshmen Guide to Mixers

Ellie Toth

It’s official. You’ve joined the sorority of your dreams, you’re meeting so many new

girls and you are so excited for everything new to begin. Mixers? That’s not nerve

wrecking, you’ve been to parties before; however, these can be a whole different

experience. They can be scary, overwhelming and all around intimidating. Here are

some tips to help you enjoy your first mixers!

1. Upperclassmen boys will give you a lot of attention. Don’t have

expectations.

Let’s face it, you’re new meat. All the upperclassmen boys love hitting on

freshmen girls. They look at you as naïve, vulnerable and easy targets. While

it can be super fun to get all the attention, be weary that these guys are not

looking for any sort of commitment. Enjoy the attention, have fun with

someone new, but make sure you are not expecting these guys to be your

prince charming. As Charlotte says in Sex and the City, “maybe our girlfriends

are our soulmates, and guys are just people to have with.” Isn’t this why you

joined a sorority in the first place? However, if you happen to find the love of

your life at a mixer, disregard all of this.

2. Wear an outfit that you feel comfortable in!

After trying on about 17 different outfits, you may be ready to give up

and wear your pajamas. It can be difficult to find an outfit that makes you

feel great; however, don’t settle for anything that doesn’t make you feel

like you! You may think you’re outfit is too conservative one night or too

revealing another night, but the more insecure you feel about your outfit,

the more insecure you’ll feel about yourself. Find an outfit that makes you

feel completely confident. It won’t matter if someone else thinks it’s too

conservative or too revealing, as long as it is perfect for you! The better you

feel in your outfit, the better you will feel about yourself!

3. Monitor your alcohol consumption.

You may think that you know how to handle your liquor and there’s nothing

to worry about; however, we all have bad nights when we lose control.

Don’t think that you have to drink more to feel more comfortable. The more

alcohol you consume will actually make you more uncomfortable, even if

your drunken self doesn’t think so. Just know your limit and know when it’s

time to stop drinking. No freshman wants to be known as “the girl who gets

too drunk.” Be smart.

4. Make sure to bond with your new sisters!

While the boys may be distracting from trying to meet your new sorority

sisters, make an effort to get to know all the new girls in your life. It may feel

overwhelming and you will not be close with everyone, but this is a perfect

time to get to know them and see who you click with. It can also be a great

time to figure out who would be a good Big for you! Have fun and get to know

as many girls as possible because they definitely want to get to know you.

Remember these tips when you’re getting ready for your first mixer soon.

Enjoy your first mixers, and first couple of weeks as Greek women!
