The Surge of Scarves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.

The surge of scarves at Denison this week forecasts that winter has finally arrived! This week it seemed that every other person I saw on campus was wearing a scarf. I love seeing this sea of scarves on campus. Scarves are my favorite wintertime accessories. Though they are, of course, mainly worn for the practical purpose of fighting off the cold, scarves are such fun accessories. When I look at my collection of scarves I realize that many of my scarves have a story behind them. One of my recent, one-of-a-kind finds was a silk cheetah-print embellished with hand-sewn beads from Guatemala.

I think that many people have a sentimental connection to their scarves. I see many Denisonians walking around with scarves made of unique textiles and of rich embroidery. When I ask in hopes of purchasing a similar one I often receive the disheartening answer of “I got it when I was abroad.”

Though most of the amazing scarves are rare finds from traveling abroad or at a vintage store in a sequestered part of the world, there are some designers and online shopping sites that are a go-to for unique pieces. Take for example, Storiarts by Tori Tissel on ETSY. These scarves are decorated with famous passages from classics such as Pride and Prejudices, The Raven, Les Miserables, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Persuasion. Urban Outfitters also offers an eclectic mix of scarves. I am currently obsessed with their Saako Folk Fringe Scarf. Its variety of black-and-white prints from zebra to polka dots is playful and artsy. Additionally, if your looking for an European, vintage scarf, ModCloth has a piece by the hard-to-find Barcelona brand Nice Things called Escape to Italia Scarf.

Pictured below are a few Denison students for more scarf inspiration! With a mix of whites, grays, purples, reds and browns, these students reveal their diverse tastes when it comes to scarves. These students show the variety of materials you can choose when picking a scarf. These students enjoy the limitless textiles that a scarf can be made out from with their broad selections of lace, wool, silk, damask, and cotton. Though a scarf may be a simple solution to a snowy day, it can also be the most stunning part of your outfit!
