The App Worth Paying For: The Skimm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

Are you stuck between wanting to be educated and up-to-date on the latest news but find yourself having no time to actually do your research? Well, look no further because your solution is here. It’s called The Skimm. You might have heard of it. I know quite a few people that have subscribed to their news recap emails sent out early in the morning Monday through Friday. It basically breaks down the biggest news stories into a few paragraphs or less. It only takes a few minutes to get the low-down on all the current chaos. They are amazing at simplifying the complicated. Not to mention, the writers of The Skimm integrate their charming personalities into the emails with pop culture jokes and references. You can sign up for their free emails here.

Still not convinced? Here’s three more reasons you should sign up.

1. It was created by two super inspiring women, Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg. You can read more about the founders here.

2. It has a 4.8/5.0 rating on the app store.

3. Some of our favorite #girlbosses are just as obsessed.

Then, if you fall in love with The Skimm like I did, you might want to check out paying $2.99 a month for the app. It includes a few more great features.

Their newest addition is Skimm Notes. In audio clips under 10 minutes, you are taught the foundations of relevant topics in today’s society. Some of them include Russia, & The US Election, the Iran Nuclear Deal, Kim Jong Un, Wikileaks, Fentanyl, and ISIS. There’s a new one every Monday. These are perfect to listen to during your commute.

Another feature I find really helpful is their Skimm Ahead section. They created different themed calendars (entertainment, politics, sports, business and tech) that update you on super important things happening each and every day with a concise description of each event. You’re even able to link it to your Google Calendar. Some events are just perfectly-timed reminders like “Get Your Halloween Costume,” “Daylight Savings Time Ends,” or “Buy Your Plane Ticket Home for Thanksgiving.” You’ll see other events like “‘Stranger Things 2’ Season 2 Out,” “World Series Game 7,” and “Australia Announces Result of Gay Marriage Vote.”

The last two features you get by purchasing the app are Skimm Reads and Skimm Picks. You receive a Skimm Reads notification around lunch time every day with a new super intriguing 5 minute article. And on Fridays, they recommend a new book!

They send out a Skimm Picks notification every Friday with a curated selection of shows to watch, podcasts to listen to, and things to download to celebrate the start of the weekend.

So what are you waiting for?! If you haven’t jumped on TheSkimm bandwagon yet, it’s not too late! They offer a free trial period for your first month! And if you’re hesitant about paying, just think…it’s roughly $0.09 a day for so much enjoyable, informative content. At the very least, do yourself a favor, sign up for The Daily Skimm at no cost, and become passionate about understanding the world around you.
