Andrew McCabe has abruptly resigned from his position as FBI Deputy Director on January 29, the Washington Post reports.
McCabe’s departure follows an internal probe of his handling of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email.
Â
Leading up to McCabe’s departure, the former FBI Deputy Director met with FBI Director Christopher A. Wray in December and submitted his plan to retire in March 2018. Sources close to Wray say that he urged McCabe to step down from his position.
Wray stated in an email following McCabe’s leave that the FBI “will not be swayed by political or other pressure”.
Â
McCabe’s decision to retire in January came as a surprise even to those close to him. Although he will not be officially eligible to retire until March, McCabe will use leftover vacation time.
David Bowdich, the FBI’s number three official, will temporarily take over McCabe’s position.
