How to Pick Your Costume Based on Your Favorite Halloween Movie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

It’s almost that time of year again. Halloween! With jack-o-lantern carving, scary movies, haunted houses, and more, this is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. But year after year, I somehow always manage to leave deciding on my Halloween costume until the very last minute. So this year, I thought I’d make it easier for everyone by giving suggestions based on what your favorite Halloween movie is.

Hocus Pocus

You don’t just love this movie because it’s a cult classic; you’re one of the viewers who made it a cult classic. And for good reason. A fun movie from your childhood with just enough tension and drama to make it more than just another kids movie? It’s no wonder “I’ve Put a Spell on You” is your go-to Halloween bop. Plus, you’re absolutely thriving with all the Hocus Pocus merch Disney is putting out this year. So this year, take your costume idea from Binx and go as a cat or another animal (cursed or not).

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Okay, so maybe The Nightmare Before Christmas isn’t really a Halloween movie. But it’s not really a Christmas movie either, which just means we get to watch it during both holiday seasons! This movie is your go-to Halloween film because you love a fun Halloween movie that isn’t super scary and has a happy ending. (And, let’s be honest, the music definitely helps!) Therefore, a pop culture costume is perfect for you. Maybe go with a character from your favorite TV show, or from a popular series like Stranger Things or Captain Marvel. Either way, you know everyone is going to get your costume right away when you walk into the party, and they are going to love it.

Halloweentown

Halloweentown is your favorite because you’ve been watching it since you were little, and it hasn’t gotten old. And why should it? It’s your go-to as soon as the first leaf starts turning yellow. Full of female power, family love, and new discoveries, Halloweentown is the perfect feel-good Halloween movie with just a pinch of suspense. You never questioned whether Marnie would want to be a witch or not; of course she would! So, now’s your chance. A witch or a fairy costume fits your style perfectly.

Halloween

Slasher films are exactly what you’re looking for in a Halloween movie. The gorier and bloodier the better. So of course you’re going to watch the quintessential slasher film series. Watching a suspenseful horror film where the villain could show up at any time (and somehow manages to survive anything and everything and keeps coming back to life) is exactly your vibe. Which is why going as a zombie or a vampire for Halloween is perfect for you. These costumes are as Halloween as Halloween gets, and with all the guts and blood involved, they’re right up your alley.

Edward Scissorhands

The Halloween movie choice for rom com lovers, Edward Scissorhands is your go-to because it’s a dark fantasy film with a bit of romance that doesn’t shy away from really making you feel. You know what you want out of a movie the same way that you know what you’re looking for in a man. And Edward’s kind and caring nature certainly plays to that bit of you that’s totally-definitely-not a hopeless romantic. You’ll want to be a princess or a goddess this year so you can feel just like Kim did dancing in the snow that Edward created. And just like Kim never forgot Edward, your costume will make sure this is a Halloween night you won’t ever forget.

 The Exorcist

Classic horror movies are your thing. I mean, they’re a classic for a reason, right? They’ve got all the perfect elements figured out and executed just the way they should be. Which is why a historical costume is perfect for you. Maybe you want to dress up as a 1920s flapper, or a 1980s hippie. Just like The Exorcist, only the best classics stand the test of time, so you know your costume is going to wow your friends.

The Sixth Sense

You’re drawn to dark psychological films and twist endings. You want Halloween movies that offer something more tangible than a traditional horror jump-scare movie. In homage to your favorite movie, you could go as a ghost (or if aren’t quite feeling like a spirit, maybe consider a skeleton). Who knows? Maybe there are more ghosts out there than you know.

The Shining

Psychological horror films are your favorite genre, especially ones where a normal character transforms into the bad guy. The path that Jack Torrance takes is almost as interesting to you as the sheer element of horror itself. Because of that, an angel or a devil costume would be perfect for you. Are you a beginning-of-the-movie or end-of-the-movie Jack Torrance? Let your costume decide.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street is your favorite Halloween movie because you like horror that catches you off guard. You prefer a kind of lawless horror movie where traditional horror movie rules and patterns aren’t followed. You can’t just get away from the bad guy by running, screaming, and periodically turning around to see him slowly walking behind you. You actually can’t get away from the bad guy at all. Because you prefer horror movies that don’t follow the rules, a pirate or cowboy costume would be a great go-to choice. What could be better than finding your costume in the lawless west or the seven seas?

So now that you know what you want to be, it’s time to get your costume! With Halloween just around the corner, it really is time to choose. But honestly, whatever you choose to wear will be perfect. So, rock your look, scary or cute, and have a great Halloween!
