When you think about it, Shonda Rhimes’ shows and midterms have a lot in common. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen in Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, or How to Get Away With Murder, Shonda steps in with her masterful script and cliff-hangers as if to say, “not so fast.” Professors seem to have a similar style during midterms week. Just as you think you’ve got everything under control (and maybe you’re feeling a little confident, too), they slap on another deadline or remind you of the 30 page group project you have due in a few weeks for finals. What was that, Shonda? Not so fast.
So, when you think about it, Shonda’s shows are television’s version of midterms. Or, maybe Midterms are like a midseason finale in one of Shonda’s shows. Either way, here are midterms as told by Shonda Rhimes.
You start off midterms feeling confident. You know what’s expected of you, you’ve done your research and you’re ready to handle it!

Then your professor makes a group project you originally thought was going to be done individually. And no one in your group wants to take the lead.

So you decide to be the leader your mama raised you to be and take charge of the situation.

But your group doesn’t shut up and learn. So you have to do the entire project yourself.

Then your research methods professor assigns another group project you weren’t aware of.

So you try the same methodology as last time (hoping it works better).

And your group actually tries, but everyone is just as lost as you.

All of a sudden midterms isn’t going nearly as well as you thought it would.

Your mom calls to see how you are doing and this is all you can muster:

You keep working hard but you are running low on sleep and need to eat something substance for once.

And once you finish your assignment, and you just have to show up for a presentation…. You sleep through your alarm.

In the end, Shonda’s cliffhangers make her shows all that more interesting, and midterms…well. It wouldn’t be college without them.
