Hayley Kiyoko’s new album, Expectations, dropped March 30th, and fans are raving about it, calling her “lesbian Jesus.” She sings about hookups, breakups, and love as a queer woman. Queer fans now have songs about same-sex relationships to connect to. Her song “Girls Like Girls” from 2015 was only the beginning, and fans wanted more. Kiyoko listened and after over two years of working on it, Expectations was released. Creating inclusivity in the music scene is now more important than ever, and she hit the mark.
The album starts off with “Feelings,” a super groovy song that is all about the complicated emotions that come with being into someone. She’s tired of having to hide her feelings in today’s society.
Many fans love the song “Curious” because of the line “I’m just curious/is it serious?” finding it relatable since it says what many are afraid to. It talks about someone who is with a guy despite her history with Kiyoko and the idea of not accepting her sexuality because of society.
The song “Sleepover” is Kiyoko’s story of loving a straight woman who does not love her back. It’s a powerful song that highlights the disappointment that many in the LGBTQ+ community face when falling in love with someone who does not feel the same way and having to keep it a secret.
Kiyoko values representation, and wants her songs to inspire others and remind them that they are not alone. Her new album Expectations is very personal, but she does it for a reason: she wants others to feel validated by sharing her experience. She is very excited to debut at Coachella because it has been her dream since she was 13. Now thirteen years later, she will be hitting the stage.
Expectations is a pop album that sounds light and fresh but when listened to more closely, people will realize its deep and personable lyrics. Hayley Kiyoko put it all on the table and is using her platform to connect with the LGBTQ+ community, giving them a voice in the music industry.
