8 Easy Dorm Room Recipes To Make in the Microwave

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Living in a dorm can be a huge adjustment from having a full kitchen with a stove at home. Typically a small 600-watt microwave is all that is allowed, but fear not—here are eight super affordable and quick recipes to mimic those home-cooked meals:

1) Don’t have time before class to run to the dining hall? This delicious breakfast sandwich will take you all of five minutes to make and will definitely give you the brain power to make it through the day. Complete with a cheesy egg and some avocado, you won’t want to miss out on this nutrition packed sandwich.

2) I know I sure do miss a great baked potato slow-cooked in the oven, but sometimes you gotta improvise and whip up this 10-minute loaded potato. The best part is that the toppings are endless—bacon, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, chives, and the list goes on. You can customize your potato, then chow down on your beautiful creation.

3) Leftover fried rice is great, but why not make your own fresh fried rice right in your microwave? All you need is a few key ingredients and some soy sauce, and you’ve made yourself a great meal.

4) A personal favorite of mine, and one that is so simple, is melting some cheese on top of tortilla chips. Add some jalapeños, some salsa and sour cream, and BAM you have yourself a heaping plate of nachos.

5) Now I’m sure you could make mac and cheese using the Kraft single-serve containers, but for a more healthy alternative, you can make mac and cheese in the microwave using just one bowl!

6) I don’t know about you, but I’m all about the carbs, especially pastas, and this cheesy spaghetti can be made right in a mug and leave little cleanup afterward!

7) Just in time for the fall, a great pumpkin pie in a mug! This treat will take you all of 10 minutes, certainly a lot faster than baking a pie from scratch!
