It’s hard to ignore the changed atmosphere on DePauw’s campus when the sun is out. The warm weather, the anticipation for Spring Break, and the return of “Fraturdays” make it hard to focus on schoolwork. If you are like me, you want to hit up the Nature Park instead of Roy O and find yourself surfing the Internet to update your spring wardrobe instead of writing your next paper that’s due.
Confession: I have an online-shopping addiction. I have acquired an “avant-garde” style this year that my friends are constantly teasing me about. You will no longer find pearls, bows, or collared shirts in my closet, for I have vowed to challenge fashion faux pas.
Collegiettes, I have a dare for you. Take a stand against the conventional “DePauw Look.” I triple-dog-dare you to try out some of these alternative and unconventional approaches to fashion.
Dare 1: Leather
I know, I know. Leather seems scary, right? I promise it doesn’t have to be! If you’re fearful of looking more like you belong at Beta’s “Biker Bash”, pair your favorite Oxford polo with leather leggings or leather shorts for a more subdued look.
Dare 2: Maxi Skirts
I am HUGE fan of the classic maxi dress. Its sister—the maxi skirt—has been getting a lot of coverage for this spring. Try pairing it with a crop top for a casual look. Or, tuck in a tank or tube top for a feminine look. The best part of the maxi skirt is that it can be dressed up or down!
Dare 3: Bustiers
Fear not, fashionistas! Bustiers are not as aggressive as they may appear. Celebs like Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus have been spotted sporting this bohemian favorite. Dress it down for a concert by pairing it with jean shorts, or dress it up for a night out at the frats with a mini skirt!
Dare 4: Studs
For those of you who know me, studs have recently appeared EVERYWHERE in my spring closet. Studded scarves, studded shoes, studded bracelets, studded bags– My wardrobe is vomiting studs! Studs have emerged everywhere this season. Mary-Kate Olsen has become a victim of the stud and was photographed wearing a black, studded mini-dress.
5. Acid Wash
The 80’s are making a comeback! Acid-wash is everywhere this season! They create an edgy look for any outfit. I would suggest mixing it up with a crop top for a relaxed look that is subtle enough to wear to class! Pair it with heels and a blouse for a great night outfit while partying it up at Hoods ‘N Capers!
