I decided to get back into poetry which has always been a passion for me. So enjoy this very rough free-verse poem about me studying in the Julian Science and Mathematics Center on campus.
The Julian lights twinkle
And the chatter of students distract me.
The rain drips down the large windows – that make up for the lack of windows in other parts of the building.
The population slowly dissipatesÂ
As the campus prepares for Spring Break,
And yet I sit here.
I wasn’t one of those lucky kids –
The ones who left early-Â
Or the ones who have nothing else left –
3 p.m in Julian.
The lights sparkle and catch my eye every once in a while,
My earphones focus my eyes onto the soft glow of my computer screen.
They motivate me,
But then they notify me of texts from friends,Â
News from over the world,
Pictures newly posted on Instagram –
I silence it.
I focus my attention ahead.
Each item I check off on my list gives me burst of serotonin,
To help keep moving me forward,
Almost done.
The group of students on the first floor finallyÂ
Scatter out of the building
Unorganized, bumping into each other,
Taking their ear-piercing laughter with them,
Throughout campus.Â
Glass shatters as a table was run into-
My attention tunes in.
The girl looks around to see if anyone notices,
But alas, we are alone.Â
No one to witness, no one to help, no one that cares enough to say something.Â
The string lights glimmer in the low lighting-
Why are the lights never bright in this building?
A vacuum distracts me.
Cleaning off the shards of glass that pools on the ground,
It catches my attention for a moment,
Then I tune it out.
One more thing is added to the checklist.
The sun hides behind the clouds,
They tease me as the temperature drops.
I dream of somewhere warmer,
The sun glistening on the sand,
Reflecting light upon my skin,
The waves crashing into the shore,
The seagulls squawking above
In unplanned circles,
Living their simple lives.
I wish I was them.Â
