Get Hooked on Pinterest! Why it Pays to get Pinned

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Facebook is so last season. The latest online craze comes in the form of a virtual pin board: Pinterest. New members, be warned—you will spend way too many hours planning your future wedding, dream home, and vacation destinations. But, is it all in vain? Luckily, no! Here is why Pinterest is beneficial, not only to your soul, but also to your social life.

Get Inspired
Time seems to fly when you’re reading inspirational quotes with pretty backgrounds. Keep scrolling, ladies. Those uplifting pins put you in a good mood. And happiness is contagious; people will want to be around you! Sometimes you just need a little reminder that everything doesn’t have to be perfect, and that you are be-you-tiful.

Make New Friends
Pinterest is a great way to find common ground among strangers. Who knew you and your classmate had the same taste for bold stripes and boyfriend blazers? You learn a lot about someone from looking at her pin board, from style to books to food cravings. This allows for easy conversation starters that lead to endless discussion.

Have It Your Way
Show your boyfriend your pin board! It’s a great way to give him gift ideas in an organized and modest manner. This way, you don’t come off as bossy, but you can still get what you want. Win-win! Smart moms and friends will also utilize your pin board to see exactly what you want this holiday season.

Miss Independent
Do-it-yourself projects create satisfaction from within. Pinterest offers simple and easy craft ideas that will stifle the fear of surviving on your own. Start small. Turn a T-shirt into a scarf; the confidence you’ll get from compliments will fuel your independence and even save you money. For your best friend’s birthday, put a photo in a mason jar and fill it with olive oil. Everyone enjoys a gift made with love that looks great on a mantelpiece. Before you know it, you’ll be sewing Halloween costumes and furnishing your very own home all from the endless scrolling on Pinterest.

Discover Your Calling
As college students, we have plenty of those moments where the reality of graduation hits us and we freak out: What the heck do I want to do with my life? Have no fear, Pinterest is here! By organizing your pin board and choosing to follow certain people, you’ll find out which categories matter to you and which categories inspire new ideas. Do you love re-pinning home décor? Maybe consider a career in Interior Design. Obsessed with health and fitness boards? Maybe you should major in Kinesiology. If you love pinning about it, chances are you’ll love working on it in real life.
