Meet DePauw’s Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach and now newest Campus Celebrity, Julie Sargent, who is on a mission to lead this three-year lacrosse program to conference.
Sargent directed the Tigers to a 3-10 record in 2014 including a 2-6 mark in North Coast Athletic Conference games in the program’s second year of varsity competition. Sargent was a four-year starter and all-conference player at Carthage. Full of experience and passion for Women’s Lacrosse, you can’t help but continue reading to hear about her hopes for this season and what coaching means to her!
HerCampus: Hi Coach Sargent! Nice to see you in the office instead of on the practice field today! Let’s start off with your thoughts on coaching a new lacrosse program? What have been the most exciting parts for you?
Coach Julie Sargent: It’s nice to be inside from the cold too! Well coaching a new program at DePauw has been a huge learning experience for me. It’s been extremely exciting seeing the team/girls grow together, and overcome challenges that more established programs don’t experience. It’s been rewarding building relationships with each girl on the team, and fueling their love for the game of lacrosse.
HC: I’m looking forward to the season and getting the chance to show how hard we’ve been working and improving. I’m curious, how did you end up coaching at DePauw two years ago?
CC: My coach from Carthage, Lauren Hume, was actually the one who recommended I apply for the graduate assistant position at DePauw, she is a huge role model of mine and made a huge impact in my life. I started a club lacrosse program in Wisconsin my junior year of college, and fell in love with coaching. Then during my senior year of college, we talked about getting my masters and coaching at the same time. I hope to be that person for the girls on my team like my coach was for me. In the end it all fell into place.
HC: Well I’m glad it led you here! The program certainly thanks your college coach for brining you to DePauw too, everything truly does happen for a reason! Where do you see the program going from here?
CC: I see us being major competitors in the North Coast Athletic Conference. I am very dedicated to the team, and want to do everything I can to help them succeed and reach their goals. DePauw is the perfect place to start a lacrosse program. We’re extremely fortunate to have great academics and new facilities. With the right leadership and athletes, the program has potential to excel.
HC: The new fields and locker rooms are incredible, definitely will help us succeed and reach our goal of NCAC! What would you tell fans to look forward to this season?
CC: Fans should look forward to a lot of great, competitive games. The girls have worked hard to start this program, and it will be exciting to see how far they’ve come. Plus, MY TEAM IS AWESOME.
HC: YEAH WE ARE! Definitely recommend coming out to games, we have a lot to offer the conference this year! Last question, why do you love being a coach?
CC: I love being a coach because it allows me to share my passion for lacrosse with others. I look forward to practice everyday, and learning more about the women I coach. They are all incredible athletes on and off the field, and really make “work” easy. It is also exciting recruiting future DePauw students, and finding the right girls who will help the program grow.
HC: We truly do have a great group of women, athletes, and students on the team, how did we get so lucky?! DePauw Women’s Lacrosse is only going up from here! On behalf of the team, we are extremely lucky to have a driven and goal-oriented coach like Julie Sargent who only sees potential in each and every one of us!
