Katherine Martin ’17

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.
Katherine Martin a sophomore studying communications. She isn’t afraid to get involved on campus and is currently the Assistant News Director, Video Production Manager for DePauw’s School of Music, the VP of Marketing for her sorority Alpha Phi, and the president of DPU’s Volleyball Club. This semester Katherine has brought a new fitness class onto DePauw’s campus called Barre and she now instructs this low intensity high impact workout Thursdays and Sundays from 4:30-5:30 in the GCPA.

Her Campus: Thanks so much for meeting with use Katherine! So what inspired you to first  teach a fitness class at DePauw?

Katherine Martin: I wanted to teach classes at DePauw because taking barre in my hometown kicked my butt into shape. I knew that the best way to stay in shape and help others get in shape would be to take the barre classes I love and bring them to campus. I’m really excited to share my passion for barre with other students, Greencastle residents, and DePauw faculty & staff.

HC: So what inspired to to start taking Barre classes?
KM: I started taking barre a week ago because I read an article praising it in a magazine. There was a local studio in my hometown, Fishers, and just signed up. I ended up taking barre for a few months and decided I would get certified so I could keep up with it here at DePauw.

HC: What is the best part of being a fitness instructor for DePauw?
KM: The best part about being a fitness instructor at DePauw is meeting new people, sharing my love for fitness with them, and seeing their improvements as the class goes on. It’s really fun to see someone go from being a beginner and struggling with the arms segment of the class, and then later doing it like a pro.

HC: You’re involved with a lot on campus, how do you juggle your course load, extracurriculars, and teaching barre?
KM: It’s actually pretty easy! As long as I stay ahead on my schedule, plan classes ahead of time, and block out my calendar evenly it’s really manageable.

HC: What advice would you give someone interested in being a instructor?
KM: It’s pretty easy to get certified so go for it! Contact DePauw athletics, apply for the job, and make sure you practice before you first class. Don’t be afraid to just try it out!
