Here at DePauw, we collegiates are blessed with abundant amenities to keep our brains and our bodies healthy and happy. While Lilly might still be a work in progress, and the student body might be a tad short on treadmills (especially at 10:30 am), we still have free access to many wonderful fitness classes.
Some of us may be off-season athletes. Some of us may be working towards the spring break body. And some of us may just want to give that New Year’s resolution of a healthier life another go. So I’ll be attending each fitness class and breaking them down, including a final rating of difficulty – ranging from 1 (easiest) to 5 (hardest) – so each Liger can pick the right fitness class for them.
YOGA
Times: Mondays at 11:40 am, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5:30 pm, Thursdays (power yoga) at 7 pm, Fridays at 12 pm, Sundays at 7 pm (power yoga)
Location: Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays – GCPA 0201. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays – Reflection Center.
Fitness Level: 1
Yoga is a low-intensity class. It’s perfect for ladies who want to zen out a bit, or as a good alternative on a resting day from more strenuous weights or cardio. While a few poses are challenging, the class is geared towards all levels; it acts as more of a workshop than a full-blown workout, but still gets you moving and stretching for a bit.
AQUA AEROBICS
Times: Mondays at 6:30 pm, Wednesdays at 11:45 am
Location: Lilly Center Natatorium
Fitness Level: 3
This is not your Grandma’s aqua aerobics, that’s for sure. Water provides good natural resistance, and the class incorporates everything from weights to crunches while simultaneously treading water. It’s a great, low-impact workout that will probably leave you a bit sore the next day. But the biggest bonus? Thanks to that water, you’ll remain sweat-free for the whole hour-long session.
