Peace, Love & Fitness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

So, Shape and Cosmo magazines have been advertising the newest trends in fitness and how to get that perfect body for as long as they have been around. Personally, I always flip past the fitness sections in favor of my own boring cycling workout, but why exactly? We are young and in college with plenty of free time so why not try out some of these new workouts? Some friends and I have tried some of the latest fitness crazes and these are the best that we’ve found!

Tabata/HIIT

I am new to Tabata, and I have to say I LOVE IT! Tabata is a form of HIIT, which stands for High Intensity Interval Training. Basically, it is a high intensity run, exercise, callisthenic, or whatever for a period of time, usually twenty seconds, followed by a rest period. It is so much easier to work your hardest when you know a rest is headed your way! I am a huge fan of HIIT and recommend it to anyone trying to get back into bikini shape for spring break!

This website offers some simple four-minute Tabata workouts: http://tabataexercise.com/category/tabata-exercises/

Barre Workout

I have always admired ballerinas’ killer legs and now I know how they got them! Barre workouts incorporate small movements and stretches that use the ballet barre and some form of resistance. It is low intensity and helps sculpt your bod quickly. This is the workout for those not wanting to build muscle but tone up. So let out your inner ballerina and try a barre workout!

A recent issue of Shape Magazine featured an at home barre workout:

The TV Workout

Now this is a workout that every single girl on this campus can do! It is all over Pinterest and you can even find TV workouts geared towards your favorite shows. Essentially, pick a show and do exercises when key things happen. So whenever Sean does something adorable on The Bachelor do ten crunches.  This is easiest workout to fit into anyone’s schedule so no more excuses, get in shape while catching up on your favorite shows!

This Pinterest board offers up over 40 different TV Workouts:

Zumba

Zumba is such a great workout! It is dancing to Latin-inspired beats that get your heart rate up! There are various Zumba studios popping up all over the country, but fortunately for us, DePauw offers Zumba classes five days a week! Check out the events section of HerCampus for more information!

These are just a few, but there are so many ways to spice up your workouts! So, instead of just browsing through the Fitness section of Cosmo, try the monthly workout they feature! It doesn’t have to be a permanent change, just a little flavor to your daily fitness routine! Happy Exercising!
