Putnam County: There’s more than just pigs & people
1. Why go to Plainfield or Indianapolis to see the movies, when there is a theatre located in the heart of Greencastle? It is a perfectly normal theatre with every snack you can imagine and you don’t have to worry about crowds.
2. With fall and Halloween quickly approaching, visiting the Edna Collins Bridge is guaranteed to totally spook you out. Rumor has it that a young girl name Edna Collins used to swim with her dog at the Little Walnut Creek. When she was done swimming, her parents would come to pick her up and beep the horn to let her know that they were there. One day when her parents came, Edna was nowhere to be found. The myth is that if you go to the bridge at night, turn off your engine, roll down your windows, and beep three times Edna will make an appearance. It’s terrifying, but it’s an experience you have to have!
3. We are begging you all to go to Chief’s for dinner. They have the worlds best pulled pork. One time, the three of us walked into the restaurant and one of the waitresses screamed to the kitchen, “Get the pork ready!” The staff is awesome and they love to see DePauw students.
4. If you are looking for something to do on a Saturday morning head up 231 to Windy Hill Country Club for a nice round of golf. The club is open to visitors and they allow you to play 18 holes or simply use their driving range. Most importantly you can rent a golf cart for really cheap!
5. Got a hot date?! Head over to Sky Nails on Indianapolis Road for a bargain $25 shellac manicure. This is the best location in town to find out all the juicy Greencastle gossip.
6. Raccoon Lake is, hands down, our favorite place to go in August and late May. Get 48 of your closest friends, rent 4 pontoon boats, drive out into the middle of the lake and you’ve got yourself your own redneck yacht club.
7. We don’t know about you, but coning will never get old. There is something about it that remains hilarious in our minds no matter how many times we do it. There are so many great ice cream places in Greencastle, but if your looking for a great time, pull up to the McDonald’s drive-thru and order an ice cream cone. If you don’t know what coning is, look it up on YouTube.
8. Are the campus squirrels not exotic enough for you? The Exotic Feline Rescue Center has over 230 rescued BIG cats. It is hard to explain but the reserve is truly unbelievable for being in the middle of Indiana. Rawr.
9. Look no further than Robe Anne Park for some Live Action Role Playing, aka “larping.” We are not sure of the schedule (or if they even have a schedule), but larping usually takes place around 4 pm on weekdays. Be Safe.
10. Hung over? Want some greasy food? Love bacon? Want an orange juice with that Advil? We will see you at Fairway Family Restaurant on Sunday morning!
