Sarah Burtenshaw is one of the eight sophomores on the DePauw University Volleyball Team. As freshmen, the group was an instrumental part in the Tiger’s winning season last year, and they are back this fall and ready to improve. Outside hitter Sarah consistently leads the team in kills ensuring the Tiger’s current 8-1 record! Her Campus sat down with Sarah to talk about how she juggles her schoolwork with her volleyball commitment.
Â
HC: Sarah, how is this season going so far?
SB: It is going really well! We are a year more experienced and looking forward to an even better season than we did last year (Which was 25-6!). We are already starting so far ahead of where we were last year, and we can’t wait to see how far we will go.
Â
HC: What is your favorite play to run in volleyball?
SB: I love running chutes. It is a really fast set to the outside. When our setter Faith Rolwes and I connect, it is such a great feeling.
Â
HC: You are truly a key player on the team! Do you ever feel overwhelmed with your volleyball and school in the fall?
SB: Actually, volleyball helps me stay organized. I feel more in control when I have a set schedule, and during volleyball season I know there is a time when I have to get things done.
Â
HC: What do you think is the greatest thing about being a student athlete?
SB: Definitely the camaraderie with the other student athletes. We all have something we can relate to, and it creates a great friendship. About 1/3 of the students at DePauw play a varsity sport, and I am so honored to be one of them!
