Tyler Witherspoon, one of the five members of the team planning Greek Week,
weighs in on what it took to bring us the event that we look forward to all of
first semester and also tells us a little about himself.
Hometown: Crawfordsville, IN
Greek House: Sigma Chi
Major: Sports Medicine
Minor: Biochemistry
HerCampus: What has been your favorite part of the experience planning Greek
Week this year?
Tyler: âI have really enjoyed the entire process because it is the beginning of a wonderful time for freshmen. I think many Greek students would argue that choosing to join a house was one of their best decisions while at DePauw. I have enjoyed the opportunity to be one of the faces that ushers the first years into the Greek sceneâ.
Â
HC: What was the biggest challenge you faced in the planning process?
TW: âThe most difficult part of this has definitely been just choosing the best week to schedule events. The campus calendar is packed full of things here and there, so it was difficult to try and manipulate our schedule in order to squeeze all of our events in, while still trying our best to honor events already holding specific dates and timesâ.
HC: What other kinds of activities are you involved in?
TW: âIn addition to being an IFC executive member, I am also a member of Best Buddies, Kinesiology Club, Rock Climbing Club, and the DePauw Community
Service Councilâ.
HC: Which event are you most excited about?
TW: âI am very excited for the trivia game. This is the first time that students are getting a chance to band together and square off against the teachers in an arena outside of the traditional classroom. The rest of the planning committee and I are very anxious to see how the event goesâ.
Â
HC: What do you value most about your experiences so far at DePauw?
TW: âI truly love my entire experience here at DePauw. I’ve had a wonderful
experience thus far in the Greek system as well as truly loving the close-knit academic family here. I guess I most value my close friends I’ve made here and the opportunities that attending a school such as DePauw will afford me in the futureâ.
HC: Where are your favorite places on campus? Why?
TW: âI greatly enjoy spending time at the Lilly Center whether it be for class or just to get a quick workout in during the evening hours. I also love Julian just because it is such a gorgeous building for a campus as small as ours. I really enjoy spending time at Sigma Chi with all of my brothers, whether that be on the weekends or just a Tuesday afternoonâ.
HC: What is your best DePauw memory?
TW: âI’d say my best DePauw memories are the moments when we return to school after long breaks like winter term or summer recess. Getting to see all of your friends for the first time really makes you appreciate how close you can become with a completely different group of people than you hung out with during high school. I feel that it truly captures what a wonderful place DePauw is, providing a place for everyone no matter how big or small that may beâ.
HC: What is your favorite thing to eat at Marv’s?
TW: âFrank’s fries and a GCCBâ.
HC: What is your best advice for the Freshman?
TW: âTo an extent, you have to be selfish and take what you want from this place. There are going to be times when it may not seem worth it to join one more club, or to go to that optional speaker, but just remember that after these four years you exit the realm of carefree adolescence and enter the real world. Don’t leave being able to say, âI wish I would have done thatââ.
