Halloween is just around the corner and that means it’s time to go hunting for a costume. But let’s be realistic: mainstream Halloween stores are expensive and with midterms upon us there isn’t much time to plan out the perfect and subsequently complicated DIY costume. Homemade costumes have always been my fall-back so over the years I’ve gotten pretty good at creatively putting together costumes with easily accessible supplies. Hopefully this list of ideas will help you avoid those I-don’t-know-what-to-wear meltdowns before the big spooky party you heading to:
1. Winnie the Pooh
Who doesn’t adore this honey-loving bear? All you need to transform into this Disney character is a yellow skirt or pair of pants, and a red top. If you don’t own these basics, check out the H&M in Center City or the local thrift store.
2. Juno
I love this movie so much! Juno is such a recognizable character that even if people haven’t seen the movie they will know who she is. Just grab jeans, an orange t-shirt with white stripes (you can also make your own with masking tape), and a pillow. Finish off the look with a high pony-tail. If you don’t have an orange and white shirt, you can also be Amy from the Secret Life of an American Teenager, or just a Teen Mom
3. 80’s Girl
This is a fun costume and probably the easiest! Just look for leggings, legwarmers, of-the-shoulder sweatshirts, and anything else adorned in neon. Put your hair in a super high ponytail, curl it or combine the two. Don’t forget your scrunchies & 80’s dance moves!
4. Tina Belcher
Bob’s Burgers is an amazing animated tv show every colligette should check out! And Tina Belcher, one of Bob’s daughters, is even more amazing! If you want to be her on Halloween you’ll need to find a black skirt, blue t-shirt, converse or keds, and high socks. Glasses will complete the outfit. Bonus points if you walk around with burgers or her signature horses all night!
5. Mad (but pretty) Scientist
This is a great way to get another use out of that overpriced lab coat you had to buy for one class freshman year. Just wear jeans and a t-shirt, and top it off with your lab coat. Put some baby powder in your hair and tease it a little, then add glasses or goggles. Really play up this look by talking in a funny accent or reciting information from the periodic table.P.S. the formula for ethanol is CH3CH2OH.
