5 Throwback Shows from High School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

It seems like kids these days are completely different than we were. They dress a lot more mature for their age and don’t know what it’s like to not have access to technology all the time. One important thing that they’re missing out on is some of the television shows that we loved during our high school years. Musical comedies, reality TV shows, and teen dramas were there for us then just as much as iPhones are for them now.

Jersey Shore

Between the drinking, the over use of hair gel, the sex, the police run-ins and the backstabbing, MTV’s Jersey Shore was a show that we all loved to hate. The colorful cast members created a slew of catch phrases and slang words like GTL (gym, tan, laundry) and the iconic “Cabs are here!” Some of the shows craziest moments include Mike “The Situation” Sorentino slamming his head into a wall while fighting with Ronnie and Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi crashing her car in Italy.

Gossip Girl

Rich New York City teenagers and their private school scandals had us all wrapped up in the drama. Every week we tuned in wondering who the Gossip Girl really was and it had us shook when we finally found out.

Glee

Glee, a musical comedy about a high school glee club, became a pop culture staple starting in 2009. Their song covers garnered tons of attention along with the cast of characters, which included Chris Colfer’s Kurt Hummel, Naya Rivera’s Santana, and Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester. The show wasn’t perfect every season, especially towards the end, but it had some great moments.

The Vampire Diaries

Supernatural love triangle romances were really popular back in the day. Friendships were made based off one essential question – Team Stefan or Team Damon? The CW created a lot of memorable programming that was on during our high school years and The Vampire Diaries was one of them.

Degrassi: The Next Generation

Degrassi was a staple in many of our homes growing up especially considering it aired for 14 years. Canadian teenagers dealing with their issues and drama were just that enticing.

These TV shows played a huge part in pop culture at one time or another. What was your favorite show while you were in high school? Let us know in the comments!
