5 Ways to Save Money and Score Free Stuff in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

All college students around the nation have one thing in common: we want to save money and spend as little as possible. From microwavable food to thrift shop clothing, we always try to save some cash. It’s nice when the amount of money in your bank account is greater than our age (or our parents ages, if we’re being optimistic). Last year, we gathered some information on ways you can save money as part of your New Year’s resolutions, and this year we want to expand on that. So after a lot of searching and cookie eating, Her Campus Drexel has rounded up five ways to save money and score free stuff around campus.

1. Cookie Dough for Insomnia Cookies
We all have had cravings for something sweet while studying for finals or while watching seven episodes of our newest guilty pleasure on Netflix late at night. Luckily for us, Insomnia Cookies delivers their sweet goodness until 3 a.m. But, did you know that if you sign up for the Cookie Dough loyalty program for every dollar you spend, you will get one point? When you reach 100 points you’ll receive $10 worth of credit toward Insomnia Cookies. That means free cookies, people! Make sure to check other loyalty programs around campus here.

2. Xfinity On Campus
Waiting for Hulu to upload the latest episode of your favorite TV show can be exhausting. Last week’s episode ended with a cliffhanger and you cannot wait another day to see if the main character survived or if Petra’s mom can walk (yes, I am looking at you, Jane-the-Virgin-watcher). Thankfully, you can access to live TV for free with your Drexel ID on your computer with Xfinity On Campus. No need to pay for that monthly subscription anymore!

3. Chegg, Amazon.com and more
Textbooks can be expensive, and you know you won’t use them as much as the syllabus actually says. Instead of spending all your money at the bookstore on unaffordable books that you will never use again, opt for a cheaper way of purchasing or renting a book like chegg.com.

4. Students Discounts
Students are known for being broke; it’s no secret. So, many stores and services offer a special discount for students if you show your ID. This includes museums, grocery shopping, clothing stores, and even software downloads! When you are about to pay, make sure to ask if your ID can score you an additional 10 percent off of your purchase.

5. Join book exchange groups or sale groups within your university
Many universities have Facebook groups where students exchange books or sell their stuff for a cheap price. Check these groups before hitting the bookstore or shopping for a dress for initiation. You can save a lot!

There you go Dragons! Keep these freebies in mind so you can splurge on important things (like Happy Sunshine). Keep pinching those pennies!
