Having a healthy heart comes from a healthy lifestyle. But controlling our diet, exercise routines, and stress levels isn’t always as easy as it seems. So in honor of American Heart Month, here are some simple tips to look after your heart in the day-to-day.

Everyone has their own opinion on what a proper diet should look like. But no one can deny the importance of natural foods over processed foods. Adding more fruits and vegetables into each meal as well as choosing healthy fats can make a big difference in your overall health.
- Care for your teeth

Did you know that heart health is directly related to dental health? Good dental hygiene prevents bacteria from moving into the bloodstream and increasing your risk for heart disease. Get to brushing, and get to flossing! Dental hygiene is more important than it may seem.
- Sleep for eight hours

As a college student, I know it can be hard to get eight hours of sleep each night. But sticking to a sleep schedule will improve your health and lower your risk for stroke and cardiovascular disease. Try making it a habit to drink some herbal tea, put your phone away from the bed, and get a full night of uninterrupted sleep.
- Get moving

There are so many ways to move your body besides going to the gym or doing an activity you dread. When you’re feeling relaxed, opt for a quick yoga session. Or if you’re having trouble getting motivated for the day, turn up the tunes and dance.
- Avoid smoke

This is a classic one for heart health, and it’s not just about quitting cigarettes or Juuls. Second-hand smoke can greatly impact your heart as well, so try to stay away from it as much as you can.
- Prioritize mental health

Mental health translates to heart health. Reducing your stress, writing a gratitude list, and spending time with family and friends can significantly improve your wellbeing. Although it may be easier said than done, don’t take life too seriously. A good laugh is good for the heart.
