With all of Sigma Chi’s recent events here on campus, including the winning of Delta Zeta’s Big Man on Campus and their week long philanthropy event, Derby Days, it’s time to meet the man behind some of the magic, president Tim Thompson!Â
Tim is a Mechanical Engineer major all the way from Indianapolis, Indiana. After transfering from Boulder, he says DU is a perfect fit and that he’s been happy ever since. As a member, and current president the Delta Iota chapter of Sigma Chi, he expresses his love for his brothers and appreciates the support they have given him throughout the years. “Every one of our Brothers is my best friend, but no one is exactly the same. We pride ourselves on having different temperaments, talents, and convictions, which keeps life interesting. I also see many different perspectives on life and it keeps me open-minded. I’ve grown as a person being a Sigma Chi.”
When asked what his favorite thing about being a Sigma Chi and their president is, he noted the opportunities for advancement of the chapter as something he was very passionate about. He enjoys the learning experiences and responsibilities of being a leader. But aside from all the technical stuff, Sigma Chi is also what he does for fun! Just last week, Sigma Chi won Delta Zeta’s Big Man on Campus for the fourth year in a row! Tim wants to make a shout out to all his brothers and friends who helped them make it happen all while supporting a great cause!Â
Speaking of Fraternity and Sorority Life philanthropy events, this week is Sigma Chi’s very own Derby Days! Tim says it’s the best week of the year. He loves the Derby Date party and of course the Bright and Tight concert. Tim was proud to report that the chapter has already raised over $20,000 and hopes to reach their goal of $40,000 by the end of the week. Derby Days benefits The Huntsman Cancer Center, which works in cancer research. (He adds that the Center’s new discovery of cancer-fighting cells in elephants will hopefully be used for humans in the future—not at the cost of the elephants of course.) Â
When asked what else he does for fun, Tim replied “not much”; between school, work, and Sigma Chi there isn’t much time left! HOWEVER, Tim quickly added, he makes a huge point to go ski at least 50 days a season. “My favorite mountain I’ve skied is Kirkwood in California, but here in Colorado I most frequently visit Vail.” He also is a ski instructor at Breckenridge—who knew he’s great with kids too!Â
When Tim isn’t in the mountains or wrapped up in Sigma Chi activities he can be found around campus hanging out, at Redfords, or with his lovely girlfriend—sorry ladies he’s taken!Â
Tim’s go to jam is the Illenium remix of the Chainsmokers’ song “Don’t Let Me Down” and he is looking forward to seeing Disclosure at Red Rocks this quarter! This summer, Tim landed an internship here in Denver with an engineering consulting firm called WSP! Talk about a busy guy!Â
Finally, little do many people know but Tim is a family guy with a military background! In high school he attended a military boarding school. Tim’s role model is his father because “he is a great leader and taught me to work hard for things that I want.”Â
So there you have it, a glimpse into the life of Mr. Sigma Chi, president Tim Thompson—we know, try not to swoon.Â
