Top 3 Free Things to Do in St. Louis This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

If you stay in the Midwest for winter break, be sure to stop by St. Louis, Missouri and check out some awesome and free activities!

Sledding down Art Hill

Starting in 1904, this historic tradition in St. Louis is a MUST for your bucket list. The Art Hill is located in front of the Saint Louis Art Museum, found in Forest Park (which is full of many other wonderful spots to check out!), and it is an informal piece of the landscape that city dwellers began to use one day after the World’s Fair in December 1904, according to STL Post-Dispatch. Last winter, my mom and I took on the hill, froze to death a bit while sledding, and then recovered in the car after about 20 minutes. Definitely wear your layers and be prepared for the cold!

Check out the Art Museum

Mentioned above, the STL Art Museum is also a free place to visit while in St. Louis, found on One Fine Arts Drive, Forest Park. Their current hours are: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am–5 pm; Friday, 10 am–9 pm (also Friday is free access to the main exhibitions in the museum!). There are always events year round that can be easily found on their events page that include Gallery Talks, family oriented tours, and even tours with ASL interpretation included! Check out their current collections here!

Visit the Saint Louis Zoo

What is actually really cool about the STL zoo is that it is absolutely free! The only costs arise from food, drinks, and other trinkets you can buy along the way, as well as extra exhibitions. One holiday extra that would be worth the charge are the U.S. Bank Wild Lights– now being featured from November 29 through December 30. There are so many other things to see and do that are free such as checking out all the animals inside climate controlled environments “Jungle of the Apes, Antelope House, Bird House, Children’s Zoo, Herpetarium, Insectarium, and Primate House.” To learn more check out their website or travel directly to their ‘Things to See and Do‘ page.

Have a wonderful winter break!
