The Best and Worst Halloween Candies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

With Halloween coming up tomorrow, it’s time to get real about what the best and worst candies are. Everyone remembers what candy got them hyped up when trick-or-treating as a kid (or as an adult if that’s your thing).

Bring this argument up if you want to start a friendship-ending debate. Some of these rankings are popular opinions, but some of them are definitely hot takes. Proceed with caution.

THE BEST

5. TIE: Skittles and Starburst

It was impossible to pick between these two equally fantastic candies for those that prefer fruity over chocolate candy.

4. Snickers

Chocolate and peanut genius with some caramel thrown in because why not?

3. Twix

A rich creamy caramel center, chocolate and even a cookie inside – what more could you ask for?

2. Kit Kat

A classic candy that is great no matter the flavor. Green tea kit kats anyone?

1. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

What better ingredient combination exists besides peanut butter and chocolate? I rest my case.

THE WORST

5. Mints

Don’t get me wrong – I love mints, but honestly what a disappointing candy to get while trick or treating.

4. Strawberry Hard Candies

These are the worst for the same reasons mints are – no one wants the candy their grandma keeps in her purse on Halloween.

3. Tootsie Rolls

Overly chewy chocolate that has a weird aftertaste – not ideal.

2. Candy Corn

Everyone can stop pretending like candy corn is good, we all know the truth. Can this chalky yet chewy, waxy yet mushy nonsense please disappear from my life forever?

1. Licorice

This one might be a controversial opinion, but licorice is the WORST. Don’t even get me started on black licorice. Not-so-fun fact, black licorice comes with an FDA warning.

I am currently a senior at Duke University studying Mechanical Engineering and this is my third year writing for Her Campus and second year acting as Co-Campus Correspondent. I hope to continue being an active member of the Her Campus community as I grow as a writer and find my voice.Â
