Easy Valentine’s Day Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Still haven’t decided what you’re doing on Valentine’s Day or just forgot about it? Well here are some easy alternatives to classic Valentine’s plans that don’t involve planning ahead.

If you’re in a relationship:

Classic: Romantic Dinner Date

Since this is the obvious go-to for Valentine’s Day, places tend to book up quickly. You might not be able to get a reservation if you didn’t plan ahead. It can also be quite expensive (unless you go to the WaDuke because food points aren’t real money).

Alternative 1: Cook Dinner

For most dates, you go to a restaurant, so try something different for Valentine’s Day. If you live on central, you might want to utilize that kitchen in your apartment for the first time. Well, at least the first time using something other than the microwave. Even if you aren’t the best cook, it’s the thought that counts.

Alternative 2: Dinner on Friday/Saturday

Unfortunately, Valentine’s Day falls on a Thursday and some professors (or maybe just mine) don’t seem to be aware of this (or more likely don’t care) and scheduled midterms Friday morning. But you don’t have to miss out on the whole holiday just because you happen to be spending the 14th in the library. So reschedule and make your own Valentine’s Day without worrying about the hassle of trying to study and do Valentine’s day.

If you’re single:

Classic: Stay in and Watch Movies

There is nothing wrong with this, and if you decide to do this, then you should check out these movies on Netflix. However, this is not your only option.

Alternative 1: Go to the Cinema with Friends

Just because you’re single does not mean you have to be held up in your dorm room all day. There is yet another Nicholas Sparks movie out, and let’s be honest, you’re a girl, so you will end up seeing it at some point, either by choice or by force. Also, it will be more fun seeing it with friends who will appreciate it, rather than a boyfriend who is counting down the minutes until he can leave.
