The New Year always brings new resolutions- whether it’s going to the gym a few times a week, or actually doing the work you neglected last semester, we all have our ambitions for 2012. This year, we should add something new to our resolution lists, something that will help not only ourselves, but also those around us. Volunteering should be a part of all of our lives, and with the great variety of opportunities right here in Durham, there really is no reason not to get involved.
This past semester, I volunteered in the waiting rooms at the Duke Children’s Hospital. I spent time with the children as they waited to be seen by their doctors. I loved playing Candyland, coloring in Scooby Doo and the gang, watching Cars, and just talking with the children. Not only did this experience offer me a bit of nostalgia for my childhood, but it was also extremely gratifying and enjoyable. I learned a great deal from my interactions with the sick children, their families, and the hospital staff. Volunteering at the nearby Ronald McDonald House is another way to help children and their families facing illness. It’s a great group activity; you and your friends could host a craft, movie night, or opt to cook a meal.
Another great way to contribute to the Durham community is to volunteer for the John Avery Boy’s and Girl’s Club. Last year, I baked cupcakes to celebrate children’s birthdays each month. I loved volunteering at the Boy’s and Girls’ Club, especially because I was able to bake and volunteer simultaneously. One of the best things about volunteering is that you can do the things you love while also contributing to the community.
There are also several nursing homes in the Durham area, some of which are in desperate need of volunteers. Though I have not volunteered at any of the homes during my time at Duke, I have several friends who have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They were particularly impressed by the resident’s stories, and how much they learned from them. Grace Healthcare, The Hillcrest Center, and the Durham Regent are all nearby nursing homes that are looking for volunteers.
If none of the options described above catch your interest, consider researching more volunteer opportunities in the Durham area on the Internet. Some other great ways to contribute include working with Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, or tutoring at a local school. However you decide to get involved in the New Year, you should know that your efforts and time commitment are greatly appreciated and that you are making a positive difference in the Durham community.
