Happy New Year: How to celebrate the New Year right!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Make some resolutions!

Whether you’re spending it with family or friends, at home or away, New Year’s Eve is always full of excitement! I mean, how could it not be? We all get a chance to put a year behind us and start fresh. If you’ve been struggling in school, at home, or just in life, it’s a great chance to make resolutions for the upcoming year. So, take a moment to make a list of goals for yourself. Even if 2011 was the best year of your life, try to think of at least one thing you want to do to make 2012 even better! Now’s your chance to try something new. Why not take a risk! And, on a side note, don’t worry about the “Mayan end of the world myth”…it’s not true. So, just focus on making 2012 your best year yet!

This year, why not try to….

-Make a goal to go to at least one home basketball game because they’re AMAZING
-Get an “A” in your “hard class” to show yourself you can do it!
-Ask out your crush who sat behind you all of last semester, because 2012 is about taking risks!
-Go to the gym more and you’ll feel great!
-Volunteer your time to a special cause, which will be rewarding for you and for those you’re helping
-And, well… just have fun!

Watch the ball drop!

Even if you aren’t in New York City, watch the ball drop in Time’s Square on TV. This has been an annual tradition since 1907! It’s a great way to mark the beginning of the New Year, no matter where you are! Plus, leading up to midnight, there are always great performances to watch like Pitbull, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga.

But, possibly the most important thing to do is…

Watch fireworks!

Fireworks are still one of the best parts about New Year’s Eve. The countdown until midnight is always exciting and when the clock hits 12, the sky fills with those amazing, bright colors. You’ve watched fireworks since you were a kid. Don’t miss them this year!
