How to Dress Like a Dane: Winter Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

It’s been a while since my last blog, so needless to say, it’s been getting pretty cold in Denmark. Daytime temperatures are averaging about 45 degrees right now and it’s rainy most of the time. YAY! The weather really isn’t bad if you know how to dress for it, and believe me, the Danes do. All of us Americans here are learning pretty quickly, because it’s do or…walk around miserable. You may not need to bundle up as much back in Durham, but in case you’re one of those cold-blooded people, here are your three must-have accessories to survive the long, cold trek up the Gross Chem steps.

1. Ear Warmer Headband

The ear warmer headband is possibly the most clutch item in my wardrobe. I really hate wearing hats and the resulting hair, so this offers the best of everything. The headband keeps your ears toasty warm and looks really cute! If you’re not into bows or bright girly colors, you can totally find them without. My favorite is a braided Duke blue one that I wear everywhere!

2. Infinity Scarf

The next one is more of a no-brainer and I’m sure most of you are wearing it already: the classic infinity scarf. The beauty of these things is that they come in a million colors, textures, sizes, and levels of softness. If you’re willing to look hard enough, you will always be able to find exactly what you want. Before this semester, I had never lived anywhere truly cold before and had never owned one. Since arriving in Copenhagen, I’ve developed quite the collection and am getting so adjusted to them that I find my neck getting cold when I sleep. Here’s a link from Free People on different ways to rock an infinity scarf if you’re not into just piling it on in survival mode the way I do.

3. Fleece Lined Leggings

These are the classy cousins of ski underwear. I sadly do not own a pair yet, but they’re on my shopping list. I think that these are becoming big in the US as well as in Europe, because I’ve seen them on the Forever 21 website and advertised on my Amazon account several times. These are nice because they keep you warm without any bulk. Whoever said you can’t wear leggings as pants probably never tried these on! With a chunky sweater and boots, you can’t go wrong. But if you’re not into that, they can also be a nice alternative to tights. You can put them under shorts or skirts and wear your favorite summer clothes just a little bit longer.

Hopefully these ideas give you something to add to your Christmas list or to hunt for over Thanksgiving break. Stay warm!
